We're starting to think Pocahontas wasn't the most historically accurate movie. For this list, well be looking at the biggest discrepancies between how the Disney film franchise depicts the life of the Powhatan woman and what historians actually think happened. Our countdown includes her name, marriage to Kocoum, saving John Smith, and more! Were YOU aware of these movies inaccuracies?

You forgot the actual fate of Governor Ratcliffe. During the starving time in December 1609 and early 1610, he and 25 fellow colonists were invited to a gathering with a large group of Powhatan Indians. They were promised they would be given corn in return for copper but it was a trap. The colonists were given baskets that were nearly empty, Powhatan Indians ambushed them and Ratcliffe was taken to the village only two colonists escaped. Ratcliffe suffered a gruesome fate, he was tied to a stake in front of a fire. Powhatan women removed the skin from his entire body with mussel shells and tossed the pieces into the flames as he watched. They skinned his face last and finally burned him at stake.

As a child, being born half-Native American from my mothers side (Omaha tribe actually, I loved Pocahontas because of the Disney movie. I had Pocahontas-themed birthday party back in 1995 when I turned one-year-old. But now Im older, nearing 29, I learned the true story of her story. Her story brought me in tears. This young girl was brutally raped, kidnapped, and allegedly murdered by those who were meant to keep her safe. I always hate how white-washed (thanks to the ignorant bastard John Smith) her story has been especially in the Disney adaptation.

A work of fiction has no obligation to be historically accurate. I'm obsessed with history, but Disney's Pocahontas is historical fantasy based on a legend based on a book based on (probably inaccurate) memories. If it had been marketed as a documentary, that would've been problematic. As it is, it's not a problem at all. Fantasy, legends and fiction don't have any obligation to be educating.

Can we stop bashing Pocahontas for its historical inaccuracies! Disney made lots of changes because the historical information was just not appropriate for an animated film adaptation! They had to keep it G rated and make it politically correct, even the villain Governor Radcliffe wouldve been killed off in Jamestown and burned him, instead of being banished back to England!

Go watch a documentary with your kids if you want a history lesson about the real events. This is a positive story about love overcoming differences to unite people of different cultures and beliefs and my daughter learned a lot from it growing up and THEN learned about the real history of this person, judged both accordingly, and appreciated lessons from both.

They didn't get it wrong, it wasn't meant to be historically accurate, none of the Disney movies are, they're based on/inspired by the original stories to make new fictional ones. Not even the fairytales are accurate with the original stories, or did people forget that Snow White was strangled, the little mermaid died, Elsa (the snow queen) was evil, etc?

After learning about her & the era in 8th grade (not long after the first VHS release) my history teacher had us watch the film & write down any errors we spotted. And if we didnt have at least 3 full pages of errors we failed the assignment. Think I had 5.
I still cant get over West Virginia on the opening map

Amazing video ms mojo of the tragic life of the real true history story of Pocahontas, fantastic job. I still love the movie its my favourite Disney animated movie ever. Wondering if the villain of both Pocahontas movies Governor RatCliff was base on a real person probably obsessed with gold too maybe.

I'm a history buff and all that, but Disney's Pocahontas is actually one of my favorite movies from their catalog. I admit it's historically inaccurate, but the point of the story was that love and understanding are the stepping stones towards reconciling differences, even differing cultures.
reply

I never thought Pocahontas was supposed to be historically accurate. They used her to tell a story about discrimination and not judging a book by its cover. Clearly it was inspired by the historical figure, but Disney took liberties in her story to suit the message they wanted to send
reply

Nope, I just cant with this. We all know the true story but Disney based it on the Legend, not the real person, Davy Crockett never took down a bear by grinning at it, John Henry wasnt a real person but still is legendary, Johnny Appleseed never escaped a giant fish, just shut up
reply

I appreciate Disneys Pocahontas as its own story. The animation and music are just stunning. However, its hard to deny how horribly inaccurate it is when taking its historical roots into account. I love learning more accurate details about Pocahontas story.

Seriously! Talking about the historical inaccuracies of Disney's Pocahontas, at this point, is pretty much beating a dead horse. Pocahontas is still my #1 favorite! The sequel is garbage (and that's putting it nicely!
reply

Disney didnt get history wrong. They intentionally made choices to deviate from historical fact in order to serve their family-friendly film, which was inspired by a historical figure. Its not supposed to be a biopic.
reply

Hasn't the Disney's Pocahontas incorrect history horse been beaten to death?
At this point, the horse has been beaten, buried, dug up, reanimated, torched and pitch forked, and buried again.
ENOUGH ALREADY!

This reminds me of a Anne Frank story, trapped young woman from her kind of people to fall for another kind of man. However this Anne Frank wants to be another kind of person, as ruins my childhood now.

Pocahontas was always my favourite Disney Heroine growing up. Although she traditionally ended up with John Rolfe, much of the marketing still pairs her with Smith.
reply

Another is with Ratcliffe. Disney made him a greedy-bigot villain, but in reality he was generous and hospitable that was tortured to death by the Powhatans.
reply

I LOVE this movie. But the history behind Pocahontas needs to be told RIGHT.
Plus, shes one of my favorite Disney Princesses.

reply

I mean a lot of animated films that are based on real life, end up doing what the Pocahontas movies did. Because real life sucks.
reply

Her life was horrific, but Disney made beautiful by changing the story. I still prefer the false story than her tragic story.
reply

I never saw Pocahontas as a true story. I saw it as a Disney movie; Disney is not one to tell historically accurate stories.
reply

Thank you MsMojo for this video. I learned a lot about the real story of Pocahontas. I am also openminded with these things.
reply

I mean you could make a top 20 things this movie was historically inaccurate for but that would cover alot of the movie huh
reply

Pocahontas was one of my main tapes that I watched. You going back makes me wonder if I actually watched it lol
reply

There really is no reason for me to watch the live action remake of the film, if Disney was going to do it.
reply

Very very great list I like it a lot very very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever
reply

I believe Robert Eggers might be one of the only few people who could faithfully adapt her life story.
reply

I'm pretty sure Disney bends historical accuracy all the time--nothing new or shocking, just saying XD
