Aniamniacs, a kids' show? For this list, well be looking at jokes, references, and themes from this totally insaney franchise where the writers likely thought to themselves, Forget the kids. This is for us! Our countdown includes Citizen Brain, Animaniacs Now, Conjugation Junction, and more! Which Animaniacs moment do YOU now get as an adult?

As a kid, you love _Animaniacs_ for it's cute characters and cartoony violence. As an adult, you love it for it's biting satire, clever references, and not-so-subtle innuendos. The number of dirty jokes the show managed to get away with is insane. I also love that they never took sides when making fun of politics. Pesto's What do you mean by that? running gag, every use of Hello Nurse, and the Finger Prince joke will always be some of my favorite moments from the show.

I feel like people overthink it when it comes on down to people constantly trying to kiss somebody and them not liking it without their consent.
I always found it to be super hilarious and when the people who are bothering them get their comeuppance in the end makes it all the more satisfying.
People sadly nowadays are just way too sensitive over what is offensive or not and it hugely gets on my freaking nerves.

From the reboot, Pinky and the Brain had a Frankenstein themed episode, and Brain actually managed to slip in a Wollstonecraft pun.
It's not a dirty joke like most of the others, but it's still something that most kids wouldn't get. However, since I am now an adult watching the reboot, I did in fact understand the reference on my first viewing.

So many of these went over my head as a kid. Now they make laugh so much.
Rob Paulsen still wonders how Finger Prince/Prints got past the censors.
You guys should do a list of Pinkyisms that only adults get. A lot of them went past my head as a kid. Now I know what Pinky was saying they make me laugh.

Happy 30th anniversary Animaniacs, Thank you for bringing us so many years of joy and entertainment! you are one of if not THE best cartoon that Warner Bros Studios ever created!
EDIT: I know technically the anniversary won't be until September 2023, But it's close enough.

I was a teenager during this shows original run, so I got a lot of the references to non-kid friendly movies and somewhat obscure celebrities (Noah was based on 80's comedian Richard Lewis. I remember being surprised that they were allowed to get way with that fingerprints joke.

I remember watching Animaniacs as a kid and then watching it years later. I did a double take when I heard this exchange:
Dr. Scratchansniff: And stop playing with my bust!
Yakko: Good night, everybody!

Don't forget Brain's VA did do the frozen peas joke in The Critic. Also, Hello Nurse was cool in showing that a woman can be beautiful, intelligent, a leader and talented. I miss her (also, the reboot sucks)

In the turkey episode, the Warners appeal to pilgrim guy's emotions by asking if he ever had a pet. He talks about his hamster which he took to bed with him every night and Yakko yells Good night, everybody!

I remember watching the Finger Prince episode long ago and my mom happened to be walking by and she saw the scene. The look on her face was priceless, but I didn't really get it at the time.

My fave parodies on Animaniacs:
Hearts of Twilight
A Hard Day's Warner
Hello, Nurse (catchphrase)
The Presidents Song
Chalkboard Bungle
All so hilarious!

One joke I can never get is this from The Monkey Song:
Hello Nurse: I don't know what to say the monkeys will do.
Yakko: For a nickel I'll give you a clue.

Maurice LaMarche truly captures the weirdness and hamminess of Shatner! That interpretation of Rocketman is both weird, confusing, amusing, and bizarre all in one!

Still remember all of these. One that might have gone over kids' heads is in the song A quake, a quake - Cause Mr Richter can't predict er kicking our asphalt.
reply

The fact that Dolly Parton did her own V/O for herself in Animaniacs is just another reason why she's awesome. She never takes herself too seriously

They had to go to court to fight a traffic ticket (I think) and the judge said something about subpoena the witness. That still makes me giggle.

Animaniacs has always been the king of innuendos. The stuff they were able to get away with at tv y-7 raring and now tv-pg is honestly insane.

It's great to know that the creators didn't just make The Nurse for eye candy(but come on now) and had here as a successful woman
reply

Correct. We all saw Prince making number one. I am aware that Prince Rogers Nelson had seen this episode and approved of it.

As an Aussie I loved the Bun control episode, really to the point and yes that is how we got our buns under control!

I love that this show isn't just for children, but it has enough jokes or subtle humour to keep adults entertained.

I just knew that the Prince gag would make the top pick, I can't believe they even got it past the radar!
