we’re counting down our picks for the times George Sr. defied everything we thought we knew about him based on Sheldon’s anecdotes in The Big Bang Theory. Our countdown includes daddy-daughter dates, looking out for Georgie, Sheldon shoes appreciation, and more! What surprised YOU the most about George Sr. in Young Sheldon after everything Sheldon told us about him in The Big Bang Theory George and Mary were both good parents. Not perfect ones (like all parents, but good ones. They love them and try to do their best in a context of social pressure, low scholar background, low information level due to the bigotry and close minded environment they live in Texas, with middle income, and having an exceptional child who is hard to understand and follow. I'm sorry that during the last seasons they made Mary a bully to his husband because they could have find a way to reunite them but it's probably more realistic. Little child are often not very aware of what they parents do for them, and a boy like Sheldon didn't share nothing with them and specially his father. And George died to early to build and adults relationship based on mutual acceptance. I think that the showrunners made good work to this characters history who runs from YS to TBBT.

I like to think Sheldon intentionally misremembers what his dad was like earlier in the series because of he lacked the emotional intelligence he would later developed. Perhaps it was easier to remember his dad as a angry, drunk idiot so that the grief wouldn’t be so hard.
Obviously the real reason is because when they made young Sheldon they wanted to make George SR likeable by audiences. And thus there are discrepancies between how he is described in TBBT and portrayed in Young Sheldon. It’s not necessarily exclusive to him but I notice it more with George.

George wasn't perfect, and didn't have all the answers but he did try to do right by all three of his kids. Since Sheldon is narrating the prequel from the future, and has been confirmed to have children himself, it's likely that he finally understands more of George's well meaning nature. Our parents' behaviour usually makes sense to us once we start raising our own children.

I cant help but see a parallel between George Sr. and Marty Crane from Frasier. Different characters and stories but at first, Marty felt out of place with both Frasier and Niles; couldn't really relate to either in a professional manner but whenever the going got tough for his boys, he was there. Over time, both sets of families were there for one another.

It makes sense why TBBT version of Sheldon would hold George in such high disdain. Once George's affair came to light, it likely overshadowed all of George's positive qualities. Sheldon adores Mary, despite her overbearing nature, as well as Connie, who makes no secret that she doesn't think that George is good enough for her beloved daughter.

We can always think that this version of Sheldon's life occurred in an alternate universe. Like the multiverse in all the superheroes movies. Additionally, it really pisses me off when old Sheldon says bad stuff about his dad. Yeah, George Sr could be rough sometimes but his heart was always jn the. right place. #sheldon'smultiverse

The scene that broke my heart on George's behalf was during the Season 4 finale, when Mary claimed that he spends his entire life doing whatever he wants, only for him to point out that he never wanted to get stuck coaching football or getting repeatedly berated by his entire family, and that she never bothered to ask him.

I like how some prequels will take. What happened in the original series or canon and try to put the aspects into it to see how the character gets the personality his or her God in the cannon. I wish some people will learn how to do that when they're telling the origins of certain characters and how they are.

I imagine that after George cheated (don’t blame him btw) Mary and Connie made absolutely certain that Sheldon would be poisoned against him. Given Sheldon’s nonexistent social intelligence as well as never being able to change his opinion, he was the perfect weapon.

In all fairness, siblings can have completely different experiences with their parents in their childhood. So even though he was a good dad to Sheldon in Young Sheldon, he was a better dad for Missy and Georgie. Because he understood them better, than he did Sheldon

Sheldon’s dad never put Sheldon on such a high pedestal and that annoyed Sheldon. George was there for all his children while Mary was 98%of the time focused on Sheldon. When watching young Sheldon I think the George was the better parent compared to Mary.

Everything we've heard about the father on TBBT and everything we've seen on YS makes me believe these are two different realities, honestly I hope they don't kill him off, just send Sheldon to college and let's rename the show and focus on The Coopers.

How is it that Jim Parsons made adult Sheldon so endearing, whereas young Sheldon comes across as a jerk. Even though Ian is an adorable child. I have watched both shows multiple times. There is a definite disconnect between TBBT & Young Sheldon.
reply

Since the Sheldon voice over is a Sheldon who’s been a husband and father for years he’s probably finally understood everything he missed when he was incapable of understanding anything beyond the exact actions and words he observed

It still bugs me that George's actor played Leonard's bully on the Big Bang Theory,
but the Young Sheldon episode where he goes to dinner with "Melissa" (Missy) will always hold a place in my heart

George was actually my favorite character. Could be because i grew up in a single parent household. My uncles, male cousins and grandfather filled the gap, and my mom was amazing, but it isn't the same.

Mary in George's marriage is a very clear example why using protection is important. Marriage or not having kids with someone you barely know is usually a good way to screw your life up
reply

Let's not single out Sheldon. NOBODY in that family aid good things about or was particularly nice to George Senior. The only kid who seemed to really understand and appreciate George is. Billy.
