If you listen to the lyrics, it's sung from the perspective from a man who's hard-drinking, hard-partying beach life has left him old, drunk and alone and he's slowly coming to understand that it's his own fault. To his credit, Jimmy Buffett tried for years to get people to realize this, but eventually gave up, probably because you can't reason with drunk people.

I would add Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend to this list. It sounds catchy but it's basically advising women to prostitute themselves for diamonds while they're young and have the body shapes fickle men desire. Then, when the women are a bit older and men abandon them, the women can sell the diamonds to support themselves. Remember that this song was written at a time when women did not have the same career options we have today.

I had a friend ask me about a song once, and he couldn't remember the name of it and I was asking him about details and finally he blurted out, you know! The happy s#(de song! And I was like, ohhh, you mean 'Bullet' by Hollywood Undead Yeah, he was in a really bad place and needed to listen to someone who had it worse than he did to try and get out of his slump. And that song did it. He's happily still with us!

Makes me think of a relatively little known but more abstract song Lost Coastlines by Okkervil River, which is afaik just about some people who got shipped out to an atol but they were given bogus maps so now they are stranded and just sing forever

TV Tropes has dubbed this practice as Lyrical Dissonance, where the upbeat tune doesn't match the usually depressing lyrics. Mr Brightside was my favourite song to sing along with as a teenager, and I didn't realise the lyrics until about a decade later.

I spent this whole list expecting End of the World As We Know It by R. E. M. to appear and was honestly surprised to see it overlooked. It's literally a super-happy song about the world ending and the singer feeling okay about it!
