Bojack Horseman is a really truthful representation of vulnerable narcissism. He grew up in a home that excessively criticized him and he has several relatives who fit the criteria for NPD as well, showing how it can be inherited. He is deeply self loathing and tends to live within his own mind and feels as though the world should revolve around his own ego. He often talks down to others, feels entitled to special treatment, can be very manipulative and deceitful, has a deep need for constant admiration and lucrative success and is very self centered in a multitude of ways. People tend to see narcissists as complete monsters, but like Bojack, they are ultimately suffering deeply while at the same time being quite prone to harmful behaviors both towards themselves and others.

Silver Linings Playbook is a beautiful movie that really helped me and my mom understand my Bipolar disorder. Another one that helps me is It's Kind of a Funny Story. It's about a boy struggling with depression who checks into a psychiatric hospital after wanting to kill himself, and it just shows how a teen (or adult) copes with being admitted, which I can relate to. It's a fantastic movie based off the novel of the same name (RIP Ned Vizzini. Both helped me so much because I have depression and I can relate to the subject matter covered. Definitely worth checking out, but can be triggering for some who struggle with depression, suicidal thoughts, isolation, and/or self harm to name a few. so watch with that in mind

Don't know why Shameless wasn't even mentioned with this (Addiction, Agoraphobia, and Bipolar) and I think as much as I loved Eli definitely Craig's actor portrayed Bipolar disorder most accurately.
Eli reminded me more so of those I know Diagnosed with Borderline. (I am diagnosed with Bipolar disorder)
I did love Eli growing up and adore Munro Chambers to this day but accurate portrayals of Mental Health I would have put the Hollingsworth men, Craig, Cam, and Emma's ED plotline all before Eli.

You missed the one with the person sitting on the couch eating chocolate/drinking alcohol/just staring blankly out the window for hours. How come you missed it? Oh yeah, that's right - because it doesn't exist. (Side note - the movie American Splendor does come close, mainly because it stars the short, plain, pot-bellied Paul Giamatti and not a beautiful person like Bradley Cooper or Jennifer Lawrence who make the whole thing completely implausible from the get-go.

HUGE HONORABLE MENTION: BEN from THE OZARK. actual psychiatrists who watched that show said it was the most accurate they'd ever seen cuz they have patients who act even say the same exact things especially the taxi cab scene it even reminded me of my friend who has bi polar with schizo-effective disorder especially his constant rambling and repeating of things.

ohh man, as a person with depresive episodes in my life, I know Bojack horseman depicts depression SO WELL that it has become a trigger for me. Like, there's no way i'd watch that show because, just from the little clips I've seen, the toughts expressed there feel so real and true to my life, they would drive me straight into a depresive episode.

The most accurate depiction of depression anyways in media to me is tony soprano, mainly because the guy is objectively a bad person. And not in the oh i do some bad things but im mentally ill so i have an excuse kind of way, no the guy is a complete piece of shit and refuses to change despite having the inner desire to do so.

Silver lining playbook sucked ducks. It makes people with bipolar seem violent and crazy when really its not that bad. I am bipolar and never in my life have i just gotten violent with someone. I hated that movie. It gives bipolar a horrible name. So disappointed its on this list because its not accurate

Jessica Jones is one of my fave depictions of PTSD and presence of regular scapegoating thru alcohol use. Her balancing of the hero scenes and being grounded by her PTSD and alcohol use is a perfect depiction of the daily battle with these mental health issues. LOVE HER SO MUCH!

As someone with BPD I am glad it has at least one accurate portrayal. However I take great offense at the title Crazy Ex girlfriend yes we struggle with relationships but we are NOT crazy and should not be made fun of or belittled.

I feel like Cameron Monaghans bipolar performance in Shameless shouldve received an honorable mention at the very least, as someone who struggles with bipolar disorder thats easily the most realistic depiction of it in my eyes.

I think Zosia March's Bipolar disorder in BBC's Holby City could have been on this list. It is really powerful and is a very well portrayed by Camilla Arfwedson. She gets her best, and is just amazing!
