I came up with my own list. Some are musicals, some aren't. However, if you love movies that are abstract, surreal, or are about love, passion, and being a dreamer, then you'll love these. Enjoy.
1) Amelie
2) Once
3) Moulin Rouge
4) Midnight in Paris
5) The Fantasticks (1994 - based on the musical)
6) Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart
7) Pleasantville
8) In Your Eyes
9) Sing Street
10) The Little Prince (The Netflix animated version)
11) 500 Days of Summer
12) Stardust
13) What Dreams May Come
14) San Junipero episode from Netflix's Black Mirror
15) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (already mentioned in the list but it's so good that I'm mentioning it again)

Oh. My. God. Comparing La La land with Singin' in the rain, comparing Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. What is wrong with these people! This top is such a pile of garbage. Not because of the movies, of course, but the comments about are disgusting. And I'm not even over 30 to be able to speak about movies so old, I just always loved them. Good movies are timeless. The golden age of Hollywood was magic. La la land is such a wannabe. From the credits to the ending scene. Poor, truly poor.

The movie That Thing You Do also came to mind, with the character of Guy Patterson being obsessed with Jazz and being excited to see good jazz once he made it to LA. I thought of this as I watched the movie and then lo and behold, Tom Everett Scott pops up at the end of the movie (the actor who played Guy Patterson. That had to be intentional casting right? That Thing You Do is another really colorful movie, with original music, and ends with (spoiler alert) the band breaking up.

How is no one mentioning Scorsese's New York, New York when speaking of La La Land? Scorsese's film is also a homage to musical films of classical Hollywood during a time when the genre was no longer in demand, where Robert De Niro plays a jazz saxophonist and Liza Minnelli a singer who become lovers, and the endings to both films are so similar it seems more than a coincidence. More people should see New York, New York and see for themselves.

IMO putting Singin' in the Rain and La La Land on the same level is a blasphemy. La La Land is average at best, found it quite boring and unimaginative. In a few years, it will be nothing but a footnote. I liked like 10 min in the middle and that last montage of Mia and Sebastian but the beginning was really slow and the ending was vexing. All I could see were scenes from other movies.

This list makes me want to see The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It looks beautiful! And I highly recommend All That Jazz. Bob Fosse's alter-ego is creative, selfish, charming, and maddening to everyone who loves him. It's Fosse's meditation on his own road not taken, the one where he goes out like a sky rocket.

It's actually because I like most of these movies, that I hated La La Land. It was just a worse copy of previous material, as if the director watched Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and thought: I want to do exactly the same thing, but really heavy-handed and without the fun and good music.

One movie that always comes to mind when I think of La La Land is The Way We Were because just like Hubble and Katie, Mia and Sebastian fall in love so deeply but yet at the end never end up together. Which (in my opinion) really stinks.

Singing in the rain is the best movie ever, way better than la la land. Plus Ryan Gosling can't do half of what gene Kelly can do in terms of dancing and Fred Astaire will always out dance Gosling if they ever had a contest

I watched the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Gorgeous film, I can definitely see how it inspired Damien with the colors, the tone, the romance, and the realism of the story. Definitely recommend it.

Wow, has this person seen La La Land? They said you'd be hard pressed to walk away without a smile. if you're smiling through your heartbreak maybe! That or they're just sadistic.

When I think of colorful musicals I think of An American in Paris, especially since it had a final sequence just as visually pleasing and similar to La La Land's final sequence.

The
Singin' in the Rain was so my first guess for Number 1.
And yes, I did indeed like La La Land, but I'm not even that much of a person for any other kinds of romance or musicals.

Singin' in the Rain is my all time favorite movie. but I don't see very many parallels to Lalaland. The characters in Lalaland are not lovable. Can you explain that better?

I'm here from the Top 10 Disney live action movies list and despite the great music clips in this video, the whiny backtrack to that one is still in my head!

I got so annoyed with the narrators pronunciation of Casablanca. It's just so cringy. Especially in a video about all my favorite films, including La La Land.

Where's The Young Girls of Rochefort? La La Land borrowed from that movie more than Tarantino can do a homage to some obscure 80s western film

I also really identified The Last Five Years with La La Land A LOT. It's completely different and exactly the same at the same time.

La La Land was way better than Moonlight. But, the Academy tends to give the best picture award to a movie that nobody saw.

No idea why Boogie Nights gets honourable mention - it's totally unlike any of the films mentioned and so cynical.
