17 Minutes of WONDER BOY: THE DRAGON'S TRAP Remake Gameplay

Check out over 17 minutes of PlayStation 4 gameplay from Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap, an HD remake of the Sega Master System classic from 1989 I honestly dont understand what people like about this game. I got it because the art style looked neat, without having played the original. Jumping into the game, very little explanation was given about the story. You run into a castle and fight a dragon thing, then youre turned into a lizard? Cool I guess. -Your story begins. - Mkay. Then Im in a hub world of sorts, with floating doors that dont logically connect to anything, no objectives other than -find a cure. - Multiple paths are dead ends, levels are flat and uninteresting, and enemies are difficult for the wrong reasons. Armor and shields bought dont show up on the character, levels are long with no checkpoints, making gameplay tedious and frustrating. Combine that with not knowing the purpose of what youre doing, and it makes the game very hard to continue. I honestly wasted my money, unfortunately. I have to recommend, if youre not nostalgic over the original, youre not gonna like this game\r\n

Guys this has activated every nostalgia receptor in my body. I appreciate both the dedication to the original (found in the great character design, world design, gameplay design, musical Score, etc, etc) as well as the effort to enhance it without losing anything that was great.
I mean, you even kept the movement pattern of lizard-man's damage sprite when he gets hit by the mummy dragon's green breath attack.
This game has been etched so deeply into my subconscious. and I go back to play it often.
This game over any AAA title would make me consider getting a PS4.

Is it just me, or were the music remakes in this extremely underwhelming? I mean, the remake of -Mind of a Hero- is really empty, and doesn't carry the same atmosphere that the original did. Also, where are the drums? I don't think I heard one snare throughout the video!
Another thing, was I the only one who noticed that the health bar BARELY BUDGED? In the original, one hit from those blue orbs would take half a heart of health, but in the remake, it hardly took a quarter! Are they making this easy because this generation of gamers can't do jack shit?

A really awesome game and this remakes looks wonderfully. But while the new orchestral music (ensembles) is fun and pleasant, to me it's not suitable as in-game background; it's too mellow, missing percussion, power and energy -- mixing it with more percussion and some synths would bring the game to live much more. I don't want to bash the efforts -- I'm a musician myself and these orchestral arrangements would be great as unlockable songs to listen to in isolation.

This. the Cursed Kingdom and Sonic Mania are must buy games this year. So looking forward to all of them, bringing back classic games that i played as a kid back to modern systems. I just love the art style for this game, and the fact that it's just been revealed that you can switch to the old 8 bit art style at a touch of a button aka Master Chief Collection style, is very nice bonus.

I'm not really getting a Wonderboy vibe from the art style at all. Not from the musical style either. I think it looks more like a western cartoon, rather than 80's/90's action-adventure-fantasy anime. Not saying the quality of the drawings or animation is bad, I just don't think it fits very well with the game.

Can't wait for it. Loved the original WB3: DT, so this game is a must buy for me.
Gosh, all those hours and days that I spent with the original game, it's all coming back to me.
Got to go and blow the dust off from the good old faithful Sega Master System, and play the damn game all over again. =)

Everything, absolutely EVERYTHING is PERFECT! (except by the Important Item flute, that's only nice. They keep every detail intact, even the healing fire flowers, the (stup)idle stance of the fishes, the non-attacking goblins in the pyramid (the only change is reaching the mummy's door.

I don't know if it's just from nostalgia or not, but this to me looks absolutely incredible! Can't wait! Loving the general use / mod of the original tunes / sounds - hopefully they get a little more punchy like the originals, or maybe even an option to use the OST? We can only hope.
reply

Hope there is an option to adjust the music and SFX level independently. The music sounds pretty quiet at times. Also, it sounds like it's missing some percussion - is it too late to add some hand drums or something? Other than that it's looking great! Visuals look amazing.

I've only play dragons curse, witch was 3? idk, but i do want to play the remake for the sake of it as a remake, because of how challenging it was, it still is, and, addition to the animations and pretty cool artstyle, it looks a lot better then how it used to be

I love the artstyle and everything aesthetically, But the music compared to the original really misses base here I think, I think it's the mixing seems terrible I love the instruments sounds but they don't hold true to the originals themes urgency and despair.

I cried like a little baby after seeing this beauty, everything is perfect. the music, the graphic, the gameplay. that's even better then just a tribute, because someone have put a lot of passion and love inside it, and this has touched my heart.

Never played Wonderboy 3 as a kid, played lots of 1 and a ton of 2 though. I can already recognize some of the similarities, most notably some of the sound effects. Can't wait to play this, the art looks so good. Looks like a playable cartoon.

I loved the game as a kid and these new graphics are awesome, but I don't know, it's missing something. it could be the music, the original gave a nice sense of danger with a number of tracks, but everything here sounds too jaunty and cheerful.

i loved -wonderboy 3 the dragon's trap-
this new game look very fun.
but i am really sad to not find -wonderboy 3 the dragon's trap- on steam.
i would like to discover this old video-game to my six years old son.

I played the originals and remember the original DT, how you start off in the castle and had to get out and get turned into a dragon, this is every bit a remake, the sound bytes and character designs have all took a modern take!
reply

it doesn't capture the true essence of a wonderboy game for me. I don't know, maybe I'm a old man now but it just doesn't feel the same. It just seems like the remake they did for the other wonderboy game too
reply

they should have made the music more upbeat, dont like the sound of it. it should be more like YS music. this is like classic music. doesnt fit the game. no i play the original over this. but this looks nice.

This was my all time favorite game as a child. I still have it and play it every so often. I think a good remake would also be the Zillion series. Those 2 kept me busy as a child.
reply

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! I loved this game as a child I CANNOT wait to play this version it looks so beautiful and the music is original by theme, but sounds amazing also!
reply

This looks incredibly beautiful, but also incredibly boring. I love platformers but I'm not feeling compelled to play this one outside of the gorgeous art.
reply

the music of the remake is ok, they could have done a better job. It should be more like the original in the instruments. Soundeffects are good though.
reply

Welp, they messed up the music. It's not catchy anymore. But at least there is an option to listen the 8bit music, right?
reply

NOOOO WHY DID THEY CHANGE MY FAVOITE SONG! The music of the town sounds like it wants to be my favorite song but nooooo
reply

This is how you remake an 8-bit game. I'm not usually even that into platformers, but the charm is so irresistable!
reply

this game is incredible, but will be exactly same map/monster locations?
will be very very previsible

reply

The music starting at 10: 10 was the best of the game and had potential to sound better than this. Too soft.
reply

my son will love to play this game. However the gameplay is actually too complex for little children.
reply

Completement nul, ils ont massacrer le jeu original sur master system qui etait cent fois mieux que sa
