Captain Marvel was created in 1939 by a company known as Fawcett comics.
a young boy by the name of Billy batson was bestowed the power to become Earth's champion by the wizard Shazam. when Billy said the magic word Shazam he would gain the power of six gods. wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, standing of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.
when young Billy batson says the magic word Shazam a lightning bolt from Zeus comes down and transforms young Billy batson into Captain Marvel. a hero that possesses The power of six gods. remember the magic word Shazam is only a key. once transformed he is a hero with God powers
when Captain Marvel was being sold it was outselling Superman comic books. and DC felt threatened, so they went after Fawcett comics.
first they sued them for gimmick infringement rights. saying the character was too much like Superman. DC lost their lawsuit. but it didn't stop them from constantly trying to sue. their next attempt was for property theft so to speak. I know I didn't call it the right thing. but what they were saying is that Fawcett comics
we're stealing the stories of DC Superman.
DC would constantly try to sue FC. in the 1950s comic book sales dropped and FC thought that there wouldn't be a future in comics. so they settled out of court with DC. gave them roughly $200, 000 and swore never to publish Captain Marvel universe anymore
fast forward to 1966 a little unknown company by the name of FM Enterprise created their own comic book hero. and they wanted to use the name Captain Marvel. and since the trademark was now available cuz it hasn't been used in years. they were able to obtain it and made their own comic book. now the comic book didn't do well, but
what it did do is get the attentions of Marvel comics. so in 1967 Marvel went after the trademark. cuz they believed if anybody was going to have a Captain Marvel it should be Marvel comics. they were able to obtain the trademark and late 1967. and since they didn't have a hero to use for the name they started creating heroes every so often to keep the trademark. first starting with Mar-vell, and several others until it finally ended up with Carol Danvers the current Captain Marvel from Marvel comics.
in 1970 DC wanted to see if they can recapture the love that was once had for the character from FC named Captain Marvel. so DC went to FC and lease the rights to the character. and then produce their own comic book. now DC knew they didn't have the trademark. so what they named the book was with one magic word shazam! but after that there was also a subtitle that said the original Captain Marvel. DC thought but since it's in a subtitle they'd be okay. DC was wrong. DC got sued by marvels and lost. DC only got out about 11 copies of that comic book before they removed the subtitle. now with all that being said. within the comic book, the TV show, etc they were fully able and still are able to call the character Captain Marvel. as long as it's within the content of the book or movie. they just can't use the name to promote.
so now you have two companies that have a hero by the name of Captain Marvel. and actually the two companies have many heroes of the same name. like Dr Strange.
in the 1990s DC went to FC and bought the rights for the Captain Marvel universe outright. and still published many Captain Marvel stories. it wasn't until 2011 where Geoff Johns created a whole new character part of his new 52 world called Shazam.
now even though Shazam is highly modeled after the hero Captain Marvel. they are two different characters. even though they try to say otherwise.
Shazam is about a spoiled brat kid who gets the power of a wizard granted to him. even though he doesn't deserve it. but all he does is absorb the wizards magic and becomes a wizard himself. and when he says the magic word Shazam he just transforms into an adult version of himself but still maintains the mind and mentality of a child. in his power is solely magical.
Captain Marvel starts off with a young man named Billy batson who is pure of heart. who has suffered countless tragedies but still remained optimistic and pure of heart. this is important because the wizard Shazam waited over 5, 000 years to find a perfect candidate to become Earth's mightiest mortal. to become Earth's champion.
and it's important because the wizard also create a Black Adam first to be champion. Black Adam wasn't deserving. and he got corrupted by possessing the power of gods. he believed if he possessed the power of God's then he is a God and should be worshiped as a god.
so after waiting 5, 000 years finally finding someone pure of heart Billy batson is given the power to say a magic word that grants him the ability to become an adult size superhero with the power of six gods. with Billy's adult body came in adult mind. remember he possesses the wisdom of Solomon.
so you see one's a magic wizard and the other one is a God. two different characters

I have many questions revolving around the same general topic: With the tumultuous history of morals/ethics in comics and the idea that they're a tool for exploring important social issues, what is the history of LBGT representation in comic books? Was there ever subversive subtext due to censorship? Who was the first openly gay character? On a broader note how did diversity (Race, gender, politics etc) become more commonplace in comics anyway? Were they considered groundbreaking or lagging behind the times? Were there different tolerances of topical material for Marvel compared to DC compared to other publishers? How much progress has the industry actually made? Are there any queer writers working for major publications? I'm just so curious about all of it, and I think you guys could do an excellent job on the issue. Thanks!

I graduated from SCAD in Sequential Art not too long ago, and it's. kind of boring again to not be around people who want to talk about comics (outside of being a fan. My goal is editing, so keeping up on history is important (and fun) This is an important time for comics, as a generation with buying power has none of the CCA stigma, and digital comics shape the industry. I'd love to hear something about the Diamond catalogue, and how it impacts sales, or on the variants bubble that boomed and burst. Or, heck, about the weird part where every comic had wolverine on it.

I would love an episode on the Lantern corps. More specifically, how literally every other earth green lantern is more interesting than Hal, but we just can't seem to get away from him. At least when he became Parallax he had some depth! Most of the time he's somewhere between stiff and moral Superman and wise-cracking Flash. Also, I LOVED how everyone got deputized into the different corps in Blackest Night. Which corp would you be in, Susana?

I'd really like to know how someone who's never gotten any comics should start, because there's such an overwhelming amount of things to choose from and I have no idea how to start or where to go to get them that I've never gotten into them, despite being a huge fan of both Marvel and DC. Love the show and want to see more!

This is a great series! A really nice balance of analysis, humour and commentary. I'm going to go back and catch up on the other episodes now.
Also, props for the Midnighter shirt- one of my favourite DC characters right now! (Steve Orlando's series is sooooooo good) Perhaps you could do an episode on him later?

I'd love to see a video about some of the non-cannon DC heros. Flashpoint Paradox has a very interesting take on a different character taking the roll of Batman, and the game Injustice also has alternate universe heroes who's alignments are complete opposites of the cannon. I think it would make for a cool video =-D

I am actually super interested in why both DC and Marvel have a Captain Marvel, but only because you mentioned it.
Also, have you read the -We Are Robin- comic series? It came out last year and there's only 12 issues, but that's the series that got me into buying and reading comics.

I think the Dick/Damian period might actually be my favourite era in Batman continuity. Red Robin was interesting as Tim tried to hunt down -dead- Bruce even though everyone thought we has crazy. Steph as Batgirl was FANTASTIC and I cried when her series ended before New 52.

i really like this series! I love watching Justice League episodes and animated movies but I don't read the comics and am never really sure the history of different characters donning the same title. These videos are a nice entry into that for me. Please continue!

Since you mentioned Captain Marvel, maybe you could explain why DC has sucked up all these different comic companies like Faucett comics, Wildstorm, Charlton and more and how those new heroes effect the main universe. That'd be an interesting topic.

It's kinda odd that LEGO Batman, a comedy for kids, manages to capture Batman as a person better than most other film versions of the character. Batman isn't a moody loner, he just feels like he needs to be to protect people he actually cares for.

I actually Like Damien. I understand why he acts like that considering how he was raised. I personaly find his personality entertaining and I love his battle skills. The only thing I did like was when he killed people.

I was dissspointed that you didn't talk about that the Golden Age Robin actually aging and never turned into Nightwing but staying as Robin into adulthood but separating from Batman!
