How Final Fantasy defined weird JRPG fashion

How Final Fantasy defined weird JRPG fashion

Why is JRPG fashion so dramatic and over-the-top? Final Fantasy has a lot to do with it, but the real inspiration is even older than that Might be my old man genes showing here. but I appreciated Amanos take on fashion for the games much more than Nomuras. Amano was able to take inspiration from old styles to make something that was new and interesting for many audiences, but also that builds the world and appears classic. Nomura on the other hand, by taking elements from whats cool or trendy in its day has created characters that, as the games age, so does our perception of what they look like. Tidus is a good example with his frosted tips hair that was very stylish in the early 2000s but now 20 years later, looks dated and laughable. Nomura might have made decisions that are better for the characters in the time the game is released, and I can see why some would like that, but Amano created looks that years later dont look outdated, and just look in place for the world they live in since it doesnt have as strong of a direct correlation to our own.\r\n

This video is IT. We need more gaming content like this because seeing how characters' clothing tells a story is so so important imo. Just wondering. how do we get western gamedevs to care about fashion? So much of the costuming is atrocious and in historical settings, inaccurate (and obv creative liberties aren't necessarily a bad thing, but there's no valid reason for a renaissance setting to include lace knickers)

It's always interesting to me to hear how these people such as tetsyua Nourma and many more have brought real world fashion into these video games to create distinct yet familiar style. I loved this video because it really goes to show how much time and care is put into these design choices and I love how we the fans can dissect it and create analysises out of it.

-Can we not? - No, we literally can't cannot. Dude, women do dress that way, particularly when they have those bodies.
It's easy more realistic than a guy with the belts. I should know. I wore three belts IRL. Got lots of questions.
Anyway, let's not not when it's an underaged girl. That's something Japan needs to learn to definitely not.

Oww guys you forgot to mention mr. Yoshida! :/
I cant understand why he's so underrated even though his character/concept designs are just amazing. Nomura is very badass and have personality and all, and i dont know if Yoshida-san doesn't like to give interview (as there's so little content about him) but maaan he should get more attention.

I love JRPGs and I think the fashion is dumb but it's fun! The elaborate armor in FFXII is particularly interesting to me. Though I also like some of the more subdued fashion we see in the yellow suit in Control for example. I prefer that less wild look and I hope to see more of that kind of fashion being explored too in games

A long time ago, I tought of all these outfits, specially the ones in TWEWY, as just exaggerations that went along with the genre. I just replayed TWEWY and basically finally understood the whole thing, how fashion, environment, trends and friends affect somebody. It's an interesting idea to introduce on a videogame.

You say extra. I say progressive. Honestly, I'm getting really tired of today's fashion. Everything looks so drab and bland. Barely any variety in our daily wardrobe, symmetry is so. boring. I honestly wish the world dressed more like a JRPG, maybe then I wouldn't want to gouge my eyes out every time I walked into a mall

I mean, dumb and fashionable aren't exactly mutually exclusive. I can never get my head around how long it would most of these characters to get dressed in the morning, let alone making the decision to add all the accessories whilst trekking through the wilderness to fight the Big Bad.

All the designers cited in this video just have a much better sense of balance and control than Nomura. Incorporating streetwear was a good idea, but he's so cartoonish, especially coming on the heels of Amano. It's fine for KH but disastrous for FF. Tidus is basically a Minion.

I did my hair like Cloud Strife for Junior HS photo day! it was great Yoshitaka Amano is my favorite artist besides Dali the girl hosting this video shouldnt speak about fashion when she looks like a feminist SJW. Feminist took the sweet JRPG style and shit on it!

I love Amano's art and Nomura's style. Nomura and Hiromu Takahara were long time friends (rip Takahara. Takahara and his brand Black Honey Chili Cookie are actually in Neo: TWEWY.
Of course Reggie is the GOAT and I love that you hit him up for the vid.

This was actually a really really interesting video! I never really thought of clothes as being a really important part of character design, but now I see I was definitely wrong!
It's also super cool to see how high end fashion affects gamers haha!

Idk if it's just my screen, but I think all of Jenna's shots could do with some temperature correction or grading or something. There's a lot of red that I think needs balancing. But anyways this is one of my fave videos to date!

Whoa, this video is so awesome! I love learning about character design and fashion, and I didn-t realize there was so much historical and cultural context in those crazy designs. Thank you Jenna! I-d love to see more of these c: -

For once, this was actually very insightful and I actually dug into this video's subtext since I AM a Final Fantasy Nerd, as well as a fan of Japanese rpg games.
This makes a lot of sense to me now.

FF8, 9, and Tactics have some of the best character designs. Recently FF15 really knocked it out of the park with grounded but memorable styles. I'm excited for the future of Final Fantasy again
reply

None other jrpg style is great compared Nomura and Amano, when i see other jrpg sometimes i'm cringe with their design but with Final Fantasy they can easily look great no matter how weird the fashion is
reply

I think Amanos art is waaaay more appealing than Nomura or that typical anime-style. Would love to see a game where the in game models are directly based off of Amanos art.

I knew Jojo's Bizarre Adventure had a lot of fashion in it, but now it seems obvious that other -wacky anime clothes- would be influenced in such a way as well.
reply

You talk about fashion, but no honorable to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? Granted, it began as manga but it has games and it is FABULOUS enough to merit.
reply

Yes! My body is ready to destroy another generation of men with dried mayonnaise on their shirts jerking it to jailbait thongs in the name of fashion.
reply

You didn't talk about Akihiko Yoshida, Who's the Chara Designer of Bravely default, FF 12, FF tactic, FF 3 remake, FF 14, Nier automata etc etc
reply

I want to dress like I'm a pastel steampunk skull dream daddy. One day, my clothing subscription services will fulfill my dreams. -sigh-
reply

I miss the fantasy clothing in the latest FF. FF15 is kinda. to normal, to realistic for my taste. At least when it comes to fantasy
reply

YOOOOO Reggie from the casual! ahhhh! yall should check him out the way he talks about fashion is so fun and engrossing!
reply

Straps and belts and tights and cloaks. That's all you need to know.
Oh, and also chains that serve literally no purpose.

reply

Final Fantasy/Valkyria/Persona fashion >> -Hype- dudebro rich white kid clothes like Supreme, Yeezys etc etc.
reply

All in all, without Europe, there would be no fashion in Final Fantasy. Another reason why europe is great!
