Why Margit is so good at killing you in Elden Ring

Elden Ring's first gatekeeping boss Margit the Fell Omen is a real jerk. Players can run into him early in their playthrough, before they've really explored Limgrave and gotten the Good Loot, but Margit poses a challenge even for seasoned, leveled-up Souls veterans. So what is it about Margit that makes him a challenging fight, and is he REALLY the hardest first boss that developer Fromsoft has ever put in a Soulsborne game? Polygon's own Pat Gill, Soulshead extraordinaire, investigates Margit's moves and puts him to the test

after countless times beating this game and hundreds of hours pvping and pve'ing trying to rush margit low level hes definitely one of the more aggravating bosses to repeatedly kick my ass lol. 2 major things, 1) overabundance of delayed attacks and 2)input read combo extensions. where he is seemingly recovering only to read your counter and extend it with really quick extension attacks which he then strings into another full combo. the funny thing is i see really streamers and lets players roll through morgott cuz they can brute force him with dps and they cant witness the majesty and frustration of his moveset and amazing ost.

I only just started Elden Ring a few weeks ago and have been slowly making my way through it. I did just about everything in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula before I went to Stormveil, so I was level 41 when I fought Margit.
Took me 3 tries, but I got him down to 1/3 health on the first try. I was two-handing a +4 morning star and my strategy is to break their stance with heavy attacks to open them up for a critical.
Godrick was a bit harder for me. Took me about 7 or 8 tries. But once I got him to his 2nd phase I had him. Godrick's phase 2 for me was way easier than his phase 1.

3: 58 Unless you're playing Bloodborne where both possible first bosses really encourage you to stay close at all times.
Though the difference is that you can actually hit those bosses with anything other than pokes, without them immediately starting another combo tracking on you or jumping away to also immediately attack you again. The real trouble with low level Margit is just how little stamina you have to attack him between all the rolls you have to keep doing. Good luck going 6 seconds without needing to roll or getting hit.

What I did was I went and beat a Tibia Mariner (in Liurnia) and got the Skeletal Warrior ash. Then, I used it in the fight with Margit. The thing about the Skeletal Warrior is that, even if it's killed, as long as it's not double tapped, it'll get back up after a moment. So, when it falls, all I have to do is lead Margit away and, after a minute, I had my buddy back in the fight with me. I'm doing a sorcery build, so those sorts of cowardly tactics are very much in my wheelhouse.

Imo, the issue for me was his hesitation when launching attacks.
He pauses for too long and i anticipate his attack and roll too early.
Theres also his chain of attacks he quickly launches which is a complete reversal of his aforementioned hesitation when attacking.
I learned to time my rolls exactly as he brings his sword down, watch out for him going into a combo, and that leveling up health and keeping distance from him works wonders when getting cheap shots

Margit repeatedly kicked my ass. As soon as that hammer came out, i couldn't do a damn thing.
His delay on some attacks but not others continually tricked me, and his ability to just pivot 360 degrees while attacking kept me from ever being behind him long enough to do anything.
I had to go level up and get a much better weapon before i could finally beat him.

for me it was easy. I picked samurai built dex and str got twinblade and bloody slash. The ight was basically i summon spirit ashes and i spam my attacks and dodge also.
the only part that i was hard for me was godrick the grafted i deal a lot of damage but it only took 3 hits for me to die, unfortunately i was forced to summon a help from the npc.

Remember when I just started the game, followed the path of grace, and ended up in front of this man at level 10. I had mad fun fighting this guy, and never really felt that alongside my run on the game besides Malenia, which is pretty unbalanced, but fun exactly because of this. I find this 2 the peak of difficulty that make you a better player.

This boss successfully put my ambitions to rest, i got to him and he legitimately killed any desire i had to play the game at all. Its been well over a year and i havent even had the game downloaded ever since, and i have zero intent to ever touch the game again: p congrats from soft, you hustled me for 60 bucks lol

I watch other people's video, Morgott is almost not moving, all the time of the world, then when I try the difference is a joke, jumps on you, attacks non stop for 1 minutes with maximum range etc. People think I am not serious witn version 1. 06 being far more difficult than previous ones but it's a fact

You forgot to mention the partially-but-not-entirely-destructible obstacles thatr are all over the place. Those hellish things punish you so hard for trying to create distance between Margit and yourself. They also teach you to unlock every so often when you do have to run around for a bit to heal.
reply

I just kept on going on him until the point i could easily no hit him, 3 days and about 15 hours later and he became a joke, from there the game just got easier, no more than a few deaths for every other boss after margit. Except for the 3 hardest ones where i died a few dozen times.

I hated Margit when I first started the game. But after playing through it, having way better equipment, being at a higher level and not stuck with the Fatman roll, I really admire how much effort was put into him and how much he makes you get gud for what's ahead of you.

Crucible Knight, Margit, Bell Bearing Hunter are all the same type if boss. Their strings are the longest in elden ring, they chase you if you get away, they catch dodges, but they have the longest and the most telegraphed startups.
So ye - parry or long ranged.

I spent the majority of my first play through exploring and leveling, I didn-t get to Margot till I was lvl 42, and by then I had a large enough health pool to soak up his damage. I was shocked I managed to beat him first try.
reply

My favorite thing about margit is you get to see him again when you're now very comfortable with the game and get to absolutely body a much better version of him. Died 8x to margit on run 1, didn't die to morgott at all.
reply

I freaking love this video. In the heat of the fight, it's so hard to stay in a learning mindset. But, Margit is a wise old man of FromSofy, hence the staff and scraggly hair due. I need to remember to learn
reply

Although technically you can skip stormveil, Margit is the 1st proper boss fight and in most games the beginning are the hard times. getting used to control and the gameplay.
reply

Dude, the biggest thing that threw me off with this boss was how long it takes him to wind up attacks. I would just never know when he-s actually going to slam his staff down
reply

I HAVEN'T died to him ever. It's my first play through and I ended up killing him in the first try. My trusty skellies, the mage outside and my Bloodhound's Fang were enough
reply

He isn't though, he just punishes roll spam, he's intended to teach the player to only roll at the right moment.
You must trascend your journo shackles and git gud.

reply

He is not. I killed him at my third attempt and consider myself a noob. Theres probably people here that killed him at their first. with one hand tied to their backs.
reply

Am i normal? I beat him and memorised all his attack patterns on my first fight with this game being my first fromsoft game. Got him on my 2nd attempt
reply

It's so good that I forgot about them and went on going through the locations. I came to Margit and Godrick at level 65 and took off 1/6 bars per hit each.
reply

I'm pretty sure there is a secret path that allows you to skip him and come back overpowered lol. I don't own this game so I'm sorry if this is not true
reply

I've only got my left hand to play with and Margit is giving me hell. I'm just playing with a sword no magic and the sword is terrible. Level 37 I think.
reply

yeah, margit is slow, but the worst is that, all of the bosses depend on delayed attacks, i mean it would be fun if only he was like that
reply

Okay there seems to be two kinds of people in the world: people who struggled with Margit, and people who struggled with Godrick. WHICH ARE YOU?
reply

He was very easy for me, I defeated him without even using the potion, but for some reason wee little Tree Sentinel make me want to die.
reply

Margitt is a pain until you learn, also if you don't beat him you won't beat anything else in the game lol, he's literally one of the easiest.
