BioShock Infinite's Bread Boy went viral on Twitter in February, so we asked developer Gwen Frey to weigh in on how exactly she made this king of crumb. The reasons the Bread Boy exists in the Burial at Sea DLC point to the strange, specific problems that developers have to overcome every day. Gwen is now hard at work on a satirical puzzle game called Lab Rat, with her own studio. Wishlist Lab Rat on Steam: Find Gwen Frey on

I love how game devs come up with their little names for things. Another one that came out of Irrational was -frob- (short for -frobnicate-, for the objects you can walk up to and press the Use key/button to make them do something. I guess since a lot of the stationary NPCs in _Infinite_ will say a line of dialog if you hit Use on them, that makes them both chumps _and_ frobs.

I love these kinda stories. It reminds me of a different post-mortem I read for a game 20 years old, where the main menu was a stylized in-game environment, and main menu buttons were placed on a totem pole. Except, the totem pole would get up and leave, because it was coded as an NPC.

I really love how it always seems to be salvaged animation/rigging problems that result in iconic things in games. Because yeah, for those that don't remember - Minecraft's Creepers were originally created due to a spectacular rendering malfunction when he was trying to make a pig.

When I realized just a minute before it was mentioned that Bread Boy is literally just doing the dancing couple animation from the main game, only his partner is a BAGUETTE, I just about died. Beautiful, beautiful solution.
reply

As a french person, i would like to clarify something: this is not a baguette. A baguette is a thin and long piece of bread. A larger piece like that boy is holding is called -un pain- or literally -a bread piece-.

The bioshock series got me innitially into gaming. Now I want to play it again. I must say Simone's videos always throw me in a loop of nostalgia about some of my favourite games or help me discover new ones!
reply

Haha this is so funny my dad made a video just show casing baguette boy years ago and it went viral and now we have lore behind him. Well done dad. If only I could tell you ( the account was David Miles )

The dragonite and chardizard remind me of a ps4 theme I bought five years ago. It was just a tropical background with 3 skeletons rigged up to popular dance animations. I paid 2. 25USD.

I used to be mutuals on Tumblr with someone who would regularly spam post a gif of Bread Boy so even though I couldn't afford the DLC I managed to get the experience indirectly

Watching Simone do the wink process at the end of the video was a lot to handle. Almost like an A. I. gaining sentience. I'll be keeping an eye on these developments.
reply

Great video, I rewatched the wink content too many times. It was interesting for me to see that, because it was like watching the inner voice in my brain talk back.

I am also a little meme boy that was born out of technical limitations, the need to create a more dynamic scene, and a creative solution to the problem.

i love finding out things like -oh his arms are stuck up. well, let's put a baguette there, that's easier than making the model behave, and it's fun-
reply

I love the little bread boy but I have diffiulty keeping track of stuff so what happens if he runs into you, does he just kinda go through the player?
reply

You know, given how much time has passed since Bioshock Infinite, it seems likely that the Bread Boy has probably developed into a Bread Man.
reply

As an ace person, I feel incredibly validated by the inclusion of an NPC who chooses to dance with a baguette instead of another person

it's endlessly fascinating to hear about the weird problems game devs have and the weird solutions they come up with. this is great.

Haven't watched yet but I'm excited! (I didn't okay bioshock - learn me the cool lore (I'm obsessed with Oxhorn's stuff on fallout.

I literally never noticed this guy.
Elizabeth reminding everyone that she wants to go to Paris should be enough context clues

reply

Simone is really growing on me. More puns, please!
Lab Rat actually looked pretty funny in that one snippet we saw, too.

reply

Didn't even notice him. Dream Paris was so beautiful with that Louis Armstrong song and everyone saying hi to me. That was awesome.
reply

This has always been an inside joke between me and my brother, glad to see someone talk about such an amazing character.

Dancing with a Baggett in the street: Should become a norm and an acceptable public workout routine!
Am I right Polygon?

I feel like this video came out a few weeks ago, 4 months already went by.

I don't even care about bread boy, I just want to hear this person say -burial- as promised. I have been hoodwinked.
reply

Loved seeing Gwen Frey, she-s a great presence. It-d be amazing if she could be shoehorned into other stuff somehow haha
reply

I Love Simone videos! because I love weird niche game tasks, and I can definetly appreciate a good bread pun: D
reply

Great video, thanks for sharing. PD: I appreciate the skiing love by having the equipment on someone-s bedroom -

I'm not even kidding: I just finished a therapy session where I talked about Bread Boy for over 20 minutes.
reply

I genuinely thought this was going to be about the history of French bread boys and what they contributed to society
