Elden Ring is, yes, incredibly hard. But it's also very funny? Polygon's Jenna Stoeber explains how with Elden Ring, FromSoftware has mastered jokes and environmental humor, a style of storytelling where the punchline is almost always. You Died

This host is so charming. I loved her accent. However, I-m not the bazinga kind of player. I really don-t find it funny. Elden ring is my 3rd from game, and I still believe Bloodborne to be best the only truly great (the other was dark souls remastered.
Elden Ring starts great but as soon as carian hall it becomes too predictable. More bosses and more enemies- do this and follow the arrows.
The fact the story doesn-t make sense, makes this game be a big boss rush. But it-s open world, so you lose most of your time rushing to find the next boss.
I much prefer bloodborne, where you playing the fighting game all the time. No blocking and no handholding.
And nope, dying is not funny or fun.

The funniest thing I saw in Elden Ring was a boss in some random cave. You fight a Godskin Apostle- reasonably dangerous, but definitely doable at this stage in the game. When you kill them, the fight doesn't end, and a few seconds later a Godskin Noble spawns. This isn't terribly difficult, but I was pretty low on healing. When you beat the Noble, the fight still doesn't end. During the few seconds' wait I was starting to panic, because I didn't have the resources to fight a third boss. But the third -boss- turns out to be a regular snail, which you can bum rush and kill before they can do anything. Such a great subversion of expectations and release of tension.

As a fan of most fromsoft games gonna have to correct you on troll -humor- trying to get an emotional response by provoking someone is called bullying, not a joke. any joke that is cruel to the target and only funny to the perpetrator is not a joke.
and -Git Gud- is the single worst thing to come out of any fromsoft game, yes, not even the bad camera in fire giant in elden ring is worse. it's entirely unhelpful as it offers no advice on how to git gud, only taunts the person having trouble.

I love that you, for your example of a joke with a setup and punchline, used one of the most infamous riddles that was so famous for not having an answer. Yes, since its conception, it was given an answer to do with another famous author, but when Lewis Carrol wrote it originally, in one of the Alice books, the point was that the Mad Hatter was so mad that he was asking someone a riddle that there was no answer to. Why is a raven like a writing desk? I don't know, why? I haven't the slightest clue.

So, Elden Ring is like those super expert Super Mario Maker levels where it's _funny_ how picking the wrong pipe drops you into lava instead of letting you progress? Cause it sure feels like the same pointless trial and error principle when only specific strategies work and the only way of knowing them is to try out everything until you finally find the solution, unknown attack patterns leading to a quick death or hidden blocks and off screen thwomps, makes ultimately little difference.

You know, I've watched countless souls videos exploring countless angles and this is the first one to hit upon that sense of unadulterated joy and humor that's also part of the experience. It's hilarious when you've died to a boss for the ninth time and on the way back to get killed for that tenth, you fall off a cliff or some mook you've never taken seriously gets the better of you. Don't give up skeleton, because this was a really good (and fun) video.

Just saw your take on Malenia and attacking Asian developers. #stopasianhate
If you actually paid attention to the lore of the story, as opposed to just being low IQ, you would understand she has scarlet rot so just like general radahn she's not of right mind.
You're just jealous that from software can represent everybody without using politics to do so.
By the way she's voiced by a black woman.
Next!

Kudos to you Jenna o7 It's been years since I tried my hand at a souls game (I have a pea brain and I couldn't get past the first boss attempt after attempt fsfbhsbvdsh) but this video genuinely makes me what to try again, not to earn my Authentic Gamer-tm card and appease the Gamer Council, but to actually enjoy the game and the trials it presents. thank you Jenna for this amazing video! :>

Elden Ring also helps to condition jokes with Fromsoft's undestanding of player behaviors by letting them write the jokes for the ridiculous situations they put us in as well
I still remember the time I ran into a message that read: -Up. Dog-, thinking it was just a funny message left for appraisal farming only to have dogs ambush me from the sky

The funniest thing to me is when yhe game double tricks you
You see a chest. You look for a trap. There is a monster hiding and waiting for you. You attack that monster and there is A DIFFERENT monster waiting
I had that happen in brace of the halitree
And i found it frustrating at the time but hilarious after

Glad I didn't buy Elden Ring. No random -gtfo idiot- attacks, please.
I like when I see something bad coming. I'm not playing Elden Ring because I'm not going to have an instakill foe pop out of nowhere whilst fighting an expected one, and have them laugh at my corpse because of their actions against me.

I appreciate the effort put in these videos, the concepts are pretty interesting and the love for games really shows. But I can't take the delivery, it kills me every time, every single joke feels forced to the extreme. I miss Brian soo much, he was a beast of a host.

Poetry: -Whether it's a scarab, an item, or a treasure chest, the setup is: 'Maybe there's something good in this dark, decrepit world. ' And the punchline is that you thought there was something good in this dark, decrepit world, you little dumb dumb. -

I love the mimic so much, you get the first reveal of the chest what eats people, and then you come back, ready for it this time. Then you hit it, and it unfolds all of its limbs and stands up to like three times your height and kicks you in the face.

0: 16 i remember finding that camp and feeling bad for them. i was thinking about how nice it was that they showed the human side of the soldiers. and then i took a closer look and realised they were eating the corpses of their friends lmao

Your explanation about how jokes work is super useful for explaining what makes Undertale and Deltarune so funny. Those games are always setting you up, be it pushing rocks or keys blowing up doors.

This video gave me a whole new perspective on this game and I enjoy it so much more. I-m playing the remastered dark souls now and this video is a huge part of that. Thanks, Jenna and team!

I've never been one for pies to the face, but seeing the glasses come off Jenna's face really made me reflect on the density of whipped cream and I hadn't asked myself many questions about it before

The only thing ive ever seen from polygon is the worldwide known DOOM demonstration. I didnt expect anything from this but its a very good video and i agree with pretty much everything.

I literally could not finish watching this because you mentioned jump scares and I felt the tension building and didn-t want to be frightened half to death. Bazinga.

I came into this expecting some Elden Ring gameplay trailer and instead got a breakdown on the very nature of comedy, and also that Soulsborne games deadass bully me.

I swear, -Homeward Bound- by Jack Trombey, off of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is better music for Elden Ring than Elden Ring's music is for Elden Ring.

The Dung Eater said, -you are me and I'm the Dung Eater-. No wonder you're chasing dung Beatles to drink their sweet sweet juices. YOU ARE THE DUNG EATER!

This video might have singlehandedly convinced me to get What The Golf
Also - happy to see one of my favorite references in Fallout 4 shown off

I think when Jen said -bazinga- she should've kept staring into the camera in complete silence for like a good 10 seconds, then continued the video.

Dung beetles are actually a type of scarab beetle irl. A scarab holding the sun motif? Well now thats just a dung beetle and his shit feast.

this makes me sad that i played elden ring first and didnt laugh at most of these jokes, that I can appreciate now after 800 hours

This is a great explanation for why it being easy meams isn't the experience so it doesnt translate if you make it easier

Polygon: what coward in your editing department decided that ending the video with a -YOU PIED- banner wasn't good humor. -
