The others were quite boring.

1991. Wow what a year that was. This takes me right back to when I was 15 and still at school. Where on earth have those 30 years gone I can still remember spending many happy Sunday afternoons listening to these timeless tunes on the chart show on radio 1, which I think was presented by Mark Goodier at the time, I'm not 100% sure. And one of my favourite films came out in this year too, My Girl. And of course this was the year we sadly lost Queen's Freddie Mercury, one of the greatest singers in rock music. R. I. P. Freddie. Shame to see Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy isn't included here though. What a tune. It was such a great time to be young. Would go back there and relive it all over again if I could.

It was an insane year if you love rock. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam all had their first major record releases. Soundgarden had the sludgy masterpiece Badmotorfinger, and U2's last great album(IMO) was in 1991. Metallica sold out by making a phenomenal hard rock album instead of the usual thrash metal style. Technically Out of Time by R. E. M. was released in 1990 but the hits kept playing throughout 1991. BSSM by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a funk-rock acid trip of greatness. Tom Petty kept his great late 80s sound going with Into the Great Wide Open. Probably forgetting some obvious greats still, but that is just a snapshot of what made 1991 so phenomenal for rock.

Until 1998 ish, the charts were a mix of pop, rock, r&b, rap/hip hop, adult contemporary. look back on the first 5 or 6 MTV VMAs! Music used to be well rounded and unique, performed by artists who worked to hone their craft.
I know there is still good music being made, but it's definitely different. Nowadays pop stars are semi talented personalities rather than legitimate artists. Music has always been commodified, but it has devolved to a point where it's a disposable junk product, much like most of the artists. It's sad.

Smith were some of the first mostly Christian music oriented musicians to gain some mainstream play and audience. Later on in the 90s some others would find a mainstream audience like Jars of Clay, DC Talk, Sixpence None the Richer, Third Day, Switchfoot, P. O. D, etc.

I'm learning about some of these songs for the 1st time due to some of them not being released here in the US. I also saw a few I forgot about, such as Michael Bolton's Time, Love and Tenderness. I can't remember the last time I heard any of that banger of a ballad.

Most of these songs I vividly remember. Some though either I barely remember or don't remember at all. Of course for the first five months of '91 I was in Saudi Arabia in the Army for Desert Storm. Only music I was listening to was the cassettes I had taken with me.

It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday was the song for my Girl Scout Troop before we all moved on. 30 years later I am friends with many still but it does make me tear up, especially reflecting on the diversity of the group and how nice they were.
