Interior Design Couple Builds Stray Cat A Winter Home I dont know that insulation is the best way to think of heating a cat shelter. Insulation works in a home because youve got central heat (or maybe a fireplace) generating a vast amount of heat, and you want to trap that heat in the walls. But a cat in a shelter is generating all the heat, and I think the most important thing is to reflect the heat back at the cat. With that in mind, how about making a tiny inner compartment where a cat can make a nice air pocket, and surround that compartment with heat-reflective material, like an insulated grocery bag. I would also consider putting a lot of straw in the shelter: straw doesnt rot like hay (hay is the edible stuff, its good at retaining heat, it will help buffer wind, and it will feel natural to a cat.
I dont know for sure whether this is the best plan, but it seems logical.

It took almost three years for the feral that hung outside of my house to let me get close. Once I did, he was all in on the attention! It took another year before he would come all the way into the house and stay for more than 10 minutes, even though I had him neutered. I don't know where he would go to stay warm during that time, but fortunately we live in Florida so it rarely gets too cold for a cat to be outside. It has been almost 10 years now and he is an indoor/outdoor cat by choice, but I do not let him go out after dark.

Black cats need to be more cautious around people because some people are very mean to them. They are more likely to be put down at the shelter because people think bad of them and therefore are the last to get adopted. I bought and also made a cat house using a storage container then lined them with emergency blankets to keep the heat in. I ended up taking in a black cat.

I did something similar. I would see a cat roaming our property and decided to build it a shelter. I made multiple homes hoping he would seek one out before winter hit. I stacked bales of hay and covered with a heavy duty tarp. He took to his shelter right away. I am the only one he trust. Now he has a warmer and safer spot in the corner of my garage.

Yall are apparently not too familiar with what actual stray cats look like their coats aren't sleek well maintained nor are their bellys so plump.
This is someone's cat they just let wander or roam the neighborhood he's not going to be living in that house in winter he's just gonna go inside whatever homes been feeding him

They reminded me when I met my first stray cat. Another best thing they can do after he stays around the house is to catch him and have him fix. Because that was my lesson, I learned from the first stray that if Tom Cat is not fixed, they would go out and fight constantly with other cats and could get the incurable disease FIV.

My Ferrel friend looks just like that, I named him OJ. He loves the little house I made for him. I put one of those electric heated cat house cushy pads in there. It only gets warm when OJ goes in there. He loves it in the winter, he spends a lot of time in there staying warm. You guys did a fine job!

Once I was visited by a black cat daily for nearly six years. He came in because he wanted to be petted only by me. He didn't got food or water. He died last November, because he was something around 18 years old, the neighbor told us. He was found, so we buried him. We miss him.

Not long after moving to the town where we now live (in 1985) a stray grey tabby kitten adopted us, stayed with us through two further house moves before a car unfortunately hit her in 2002. Was very quick on her feet, once caught a stout which she kindly presented to us as a trophy.

It’s a great lil house but if anyone wants to make their cats a shelter, make sure there are at least two exits. If there’s one exit/entrance cats don’t like it and it stresses them as it means no escape if predators trap them inside.
With two exits they can always run.

. and don't forget to put a blanket inside for the cold weather. It also helps to keep his body heat inside and incase of any drafts he can use his paws to arrange the covers to his needs. Love the house. And he looks well pleased with himself sitting outside the entrance.

When i was about 8 or 9 i took a bunch of my dads wood scraps and built a 2 story house. My dad asks what is that I said its a cat house and my dad spit out his coffee and busted up laughing. Wasnt till about a year later i figured it out.

Happy and unique story! I love the house and how they care about Fat Billy. My favorite parts are seeing Da and the dog watching out the indoor. When he says Interest is high! that was really cute. Is Fat Billy going to meet the goggie Sequel!

A very kind couple -- but quit feeding dry food -- it's garbage! You can give him canned food by Feline Natural (a New Zealand company) that doesn't have rendered meats and the crap ingredients of US pet food manufacturers.

Husband: he is a cat, he does not need us to build a house
a moment later.
Husband: If we are going to build this we need, insulater for warmth, weather proof roofing, good material etc

Around here where I live I see so many stray cats. I try to help but most just run away. Thank goodness for people like you who go out of their way to help strays. Fat Billy looks very happy with his new home.

That's so nice. we get threatened when we feed cats. neighbors push for fine. were I live i can't even trap them take to SPCA they are over crowded. .me and husband get them fixed so no kittens. it's so sad.

I am a huge cat person! vWe just lost one of ours. She lived a VERY LONG GOOD life but had cancer and was at her end. Her name was Ellie. Was black and white and lives forever in are hearts and on are tv walll.
reply

Oh this is a all a game. They want you to think you did this completely on your own volition. In reality, this cat had you targeted as servants for quite a while and was simply laying out it's plan. ;)
reply

This cat is not stray cat. He is huge and looks good. He has a house, but he probably just likes to wander the street from time to time and goes back to his house once in a while. I had a cat like this.
reply

I have the exact same sitch with a stray black cat as well, except Buddy will come up by my wife and i for a petting. Built him a nice insulated house with a heating pad for our cold Wi winters.
reply

Fair play to him. I can see this bloke's reasoning. I once turned a box for birthday presents into a Landrover for my niece. That little job took on a life of it's own.
reply

Just take a large plastic box with a top cut a whole in both ends of it and put a blanket in it
I think cats usually want an escape hatch 2 ways in 2 ways out

reply

Why do they always build the entrance in the middle For the cat, symmetry doesn't matter and the entrance on one side would provide more space to hide from the wind.
reply

This cat doesn't look stray, but well fed and taken care of. Just look how the fur is shining, and how fat it is. You probably lured somebody else's cat.
reply

I now have twenty cats on my property because of the idea of building shelter for one. Houses everywhere now. I thank you for doing so for him.
reply

He's actually doing you a favor. He's fat by eating the mice around your property.
He looks like he has a home, just coming to visit.

reply

By the looks of it, Fat Billy has more places were he picks up some snacks. He must be a great manipulator of his human servants.
reply

More people need to be like you and provide for animals instead of scaring them off. Many times it heals BOTH parties involved.
reply

No heat source.
What arrogant, self important assets.
I listened to every word.
You did this for you not the cat.

reply

Love this little vid. Awesome build right there. The cedar is so cool. I wonder if the drywall is up to code though 1/2
reply

Kudos to you- first, for the name Fat Billy, and second, for the kind and generous 'house build' for said Fat Billy.
reply

You should get him a electric blanket or reptile warming pad for inside and a flap for the door to block wind
reply

So now the little murder mittens can maim songbirds and crap in flower beds, spreading disease
reply

The neighbour 4 houses down the road cannot understand why their black cat is getting SO FAT
