Cat Hides From Her Foster Mom For A Year Then She Does This Faith = Restored I would love for this to happen with ours. (We have several feral cats that visit, but Verbena kept having kittens. It took about a year to trap her. We got 2 of her litters - 9 kittens - and herself spayed. It was so stressful. Nowadays she hangs out at the house across the street that no one is living in. (We live sort of in the country. She only appears on our property now at night, after dark, to eat. She still needs a comfortable distance between us. I wish I could REALLY work with her more, but like I said. shes never here during the day. (She used to hang out in the tree line behind our barn and by the road. Whenever I was watering the garden she would just watch me from a distance.
Theres another cat that often shows up now, too. I definitely can work with it, but its hard because - again - it only shows up after dark and Im not comfortable outside here at night. (Its really dark/poor lighting on our porch, we have HUGE spiders you can hardly see until theyre right up on you, and we had an over 5 ft snake on our porch the other night. It even climbed up the front door/window. Super creepy.
I MISS having a cat so much, but the family refuses to get another one. My only hope is for a feral/stray to learn to trust me and become a barn cat. (After being spayed/neutered.

Three years ago this past July, a little starving, abused, clearly traumatized kitten came crying at our door (she must’ve heard that we are crazy cat people lol. She bonded with my partner immediately; at best, she tolerated me, but more often, she was terrified of me. I would make some gesture or something about my voice would trigger her PTSD. She would look at me in abject terror and hide beneath the dresser (yes, she was and still is very small due to malnutrition. We are convinced that a woman abused her. To completely accept my partner and to be terrified of an experienced lifelong crazy cat lady convinced me of that.
After awhile, I tried to stick to the modest goal of not terrifying her. Almost 3 years to the day, I was on the floor doing yoga and she approached me. I remained still and spoke softly to her and for the first time, she rubbed against me over and over and over, like she was trying to make up for lost time. After that, any time I was on the ground, she would come to me for pets and loving and eventually, she lost her fear of me entirely. Yes, she’s still a daddy’s girl, but let me tell yathere have been few things more gratifying than winning the trust of that little cat who had no reason to trust any woman.

I don't think this would ever be featured on the Dodo because she was my brother's cat who didn't take photos, but his cat went from his cat to my grandma's cat to my cat. She would hide. Always. Always under blankets, beds, or closets. Then I started hanging out with my grandma and I'd pet Cici's cheek while she was hiding in the closet. Just gentle pets. No photos. Eventually, Cici would come out from the closet and hang out with me and my grandma. When grandma died, I inherited her. Cici doesn't know how to be a cat. She hides around everyone else and doesn't know how to purr properly. But she discovered laps two years ago - when she was 16 - when she jumped on my lap at decided to lie down. She's loved laps ever since.
I've only recorded her adjustment from hiding to cuddle with me on bed to lap, so probably not good enough for the Dodo, but this 18 year old dear is just SO content to sleep on my lap while I type that it's inspiring.
Once she dies, which I hope isn't soon, I'm getting an elderly cat from the Humane Society. These elder cats have so much love to give if you give them a chance.

My Kali, a calico that was the runt of the litter and now is 16 pounds, maybe I’ve had since she was 5 weeks old. she is now 5 years old and has never once sat on my lap! She lets me pick her up and kiss her, but then she wants down. never has slept in the same room as me. I do everything for her. she eats the best food, licables, treats, wet food, a water fountain a toy box full of toys, 2 cat trees I just can’t get her to be affectionate. My cat that passed away was my cuddle buddy. I’m used to sleeping by myself now, but I wish so bad she would come around when she was weeks old she did lay up on my shoulder and would sleep awhile, but I think that was only because of the warmth since kittens can’t control their body temperature yetI’m just sad about it. people has told me just give it time. but 5 years and nothing has changed she’s also scared to death of anyone that comes to my door at my apartment. She trusts and likes my mom, even will lay on her back while shes around! but that’s it! My dad has tried like crazy to pet her and she hisses and runs. It’s crazy!

I feel like I'm not doing my job Yeah. This is exactly how I feel right now and it has been barely 4 days. Trying everything I can but the cat I just adopted is just terrified of me, doesn't play, doesn't eat from my hand. Spends his whole day hiding from me, not moving an inch. He hides so well I had to go look around for him around the neighboorhood at midnight for 2 hours, thinking he somehow managed to get on the balcony and thru the nets, before coming back and watching him dash from his cat tree lower level to his new hiding spot xD But at least I've never heard him hiss (or meow for that matter, he eats (except from my hand, drinks and eliminates (after 3 days he now uses his litter box consistently. It is hard and as someone who never owned a cat no amount of reading the internet can reassure you that you are doing the right things for your cat, especially since they are all different. But hey, we'll get thru this eventually!

My GF had a cat that was the most timid thing I had ever met. I didn’t even see her for months. She would hide in the basement every time I came over. Then she started coming around when I was there and watch me across the room while I did stuff around the house. Then one morning we were at the table having coffee and she just walked over and hopped on my lap. After that she would often come to me and let her pet her or jump on my lap when I sat at the table. She ended up passing of cancer and it was a terrible thing to watch. I did feel honored she accepted me. My GFs mom was shocked because she had never even gotten close enough to her to pet her.

My cat Pablo was rescued as a tiny kitten after he crawled up a downspout with his brother and sister. His mother had disappeared, probably killed by a bobcat. Unfortunately his sister didn't make it, but Pablo and his brother Julio did. Julio is very friendly and outgoing, but Pablo had so much PTSD that he wouldn't even let me touch him. We worked on his PTSD every day for three months with those cat squeeze tube treats. Lucky for him he's strongly bonded to his brother, who served as an example of how good life can be once you find someone you can trust. Now he lets me pet him, no problem. I feel lucky that we found each other.

I had one who was a total alpha female and commanded her space and wnated outside ot hunt day and nught. Then one day she came to me when i slept and woke my by the very most gentle of tiny bites to my nos. She would not let me go back to sleep until she d had a full half hour with pets from my hands. At midnight lol. z it was a cold winter, only my face was sout of the blankets. and she was a total cuddlebutt from there out. She was ten then and i d lived with her since she was 4 weeks. She was both hiding, she was not afriad, she just had better things on her mind and butterflies and such to chase.

We have her identical twin. In every exact way. The color of her body, she is just like her and she did the exact same things in our bathroom and home. It's like God gave us her sister. We right now our on the 11th month and we are probably in the same transition period as you. Exactly the same. This is such a beautiful thing for us to see. Thank you oh thank you for sharing it. We call our little one Sophie. Sophie got to make her choice with us and we are SO thankful she has.

Indeed, socializing a feral or abused animal requires consistent love, acknowledgement, and affection. I volunteered at a shelter where I socialized the most unsocialized cats. Some, it took several weeks just standing by their cage so they could get familiar with my voice and scent until they were ready to work hands on. All of them were a success. What a blessing it is to be able to gain the trust from the most untrusting little ones. This story brought a big smile.

I'm confused. Did she say the cat was hiding under the sofa for a year, before she called the Cat Whisperer lady Then later in the video she said it took her four months to get the cat to sit in her lap. The timelines seem a bit off. I would give the cat the weekend before I would purrito her and she wouldn't have a chance to do all of that exploring night. This is one patient lady bc I couldn't wait all that time on a cat to make up her mind.

I had a bookshop in Ohio wherein shelter cats were fostered and then adopted by customers. More than 50 were adopted from my shop over the years. I then wrote a series of novels about the experience (Shelve Under C: A Tale of Used Books and Cats is the first) to encourage other shops to look into fostering dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. The business that took over my location continued to foster, thankfully.

My adopted Maine Coon ( 3 years) had 6 homes in 3 years and was
terrified. The first 6 months with me, she slept in the middle of my bed
Burrowed under all the blankets. She only came out at night when I
was asleep. Now 2 years later, she’s happy, and loves me but still startles
at strange noises and hides with strangers. She has a sister now, and
a good life.

I've caught many ferals and would deal with the same thing from some. One had to be kept in my bathroom for a month and a half because he was so vicious, eventually he came around and I was able to let him out. This was years ago and is laying beside me cuddling right now. Another took a year but she also became a loving house cat. Patients and love will bring them around!

There's no in-between LOL

Her little face makes me cry! She must have had an abusive past. I’m so glad Stacia is keeping her, I don’t think she could adjust to another home. And Stacia has the perfect home for herquiet and calm and routine oriented. She would not do well in a busier household.

Some cats are naturally more skittish and untrusting than others (temperment, and a cat living outdoors for most of its life will have trouble adjusting to indoor living; such a disposition in a cat does not necessarily mean it had a prior traumatic or uneasy living.

I cried like a baby watching this. This is so beautiful. I’m reparenting my inner child now and recognized myself in Gia - severely abused and terrified of people. This gives me hope and reassurance. Thank you for spreading love and kindness!

It takes some cats getting used to a new environment even if they are domesticated. I moved to a new home with my cats a few years ago. It was two weeks before my female came out of the bathroom and wanted to take a look.

He looks exactly like my cat Taco who lived over 20 years. He could open doors with paws, if we did't lock the deadbolt we would come home to find the front door swinging in the wind. He was a special animal.

The thing I have learned from having rescue cat's, is that they had really rescued me. The love I have for them is from deep in my heart and I enjoy their company on so many levels, true love for sure.

The purr says it all.
It's not possible to do any better than what you managed accomplishing.
We have to keep in mind the cat's history was not known and that felines prefer being independent.

I have a 1 year old feral cat hiding 23 hours in my closet, only comes out in the middle of the night for food and to explore a little bit. This video gives me hope and some ideas to go to the next step

This cat hates that dog you have, she does not hate you, she is plotting to scratch his eyes out. I have a dog that mimics yuck, when he see's a dog, your not alone.

My cat Bella did this for two weeks. Its still a lot of anxiety but to go from hiding from us to demanding rubs and sleeping with us. Is the best feeling in the world.

I'm so glad you were patient with her. Cats are so sweet when they know you love them and they trust you. like pretty much every living being

Cats have to deal with alot of personal anxiety, so the poor guys need alot of patience. They are full of fear and need time to trust.

I had a cat who would hide from me since he was a kitten, 12 years later he came out to say goodbye. He passed away a old scardy cat.
