Wild Groundhog Won't Let Woman Go Home Without Her Wild Hearts We had a ground hog show up on our property and now has made a burrow on the side of our house where we watch television at night. We werent sure what to do, so my husband decided to refill the hole she dug, then placed a board over it all. The next day, Greta showed up on our deck, while we were in our kitchen cooking. She was exhausted and decided to lay down in plain view, it was if she was begging my husband not to do that again. So we named her, not knowing if it was a boy or girl. We can change it to Greg if we ever find out. About every other day, she climbs up and our deck ledge and knocks one particular plant over. She will do this and then look in our window. It seems like she is letting us know something. Thanks for sharing your story it has helped us understand some things.

What a precious gift! I love groundhogs. A mother has her babies under our back shed every year but she won't come anywhere near us.
Adorable animal AND story. That was beautiful that she walked up and picked you and didnt want to be anywhere else. That's a relative who passed and is reincarnated into a beautiful little animal who still knows you.

Thank God you stopped and helped her. She would have never had made it. Thank you to you and your husband for then adopting her. We rescued a beautiful House Sparrow, that could not be released into the wild. He's our everything. He's our world. I love how you let her be outside but always are with her as family.

A cute story. a cute animal. In my opinion it cannot be a wild creature, since it will be shy and not allow anyone to touch it. Maybe the groundhog has been abandonned by its previous owners It is wonderful nonetheless it found a new loving family and furry friends!

I wonder if the groundhog had been found as a baby, brought up by kind but inexperienced people, and then released without the typical training to live wild and soft-release time. It would explain her lack of knowledge of burrow building and lack of fear of humans.

Oh I love the fact of how you found her, and how your love for her happened. You can see in both your faces pure love. So Beautiful. Once in a lifetime experience. Something you will always remember. She is precious. Bless your hearts, all of you.

Fantastic that you can take care of him, and enjoy life together! I have a feeling though he might have been in case by humans previously, or he would be hesitant to seek contact in this way. Maybe someone had him but decided to let him out in nature again.

Just fyi - you should always be careful about touching a wild animal that is acting very friendly. It can actually be a sign of rabies. Unless you have observed the animal before and know this is its normal behavior, be cautious in how you help it.

Some animals are smart enough to attached themselves to those who gives free food. That's how dogs attached themselves to people thousands of years ago. No need to forage when someone just brings you food.
reply

That Groundhog had to be domesticated before. I can’t see a creature like that normally attaching to humans without feeding or some form of domestication.

Who could refuse such a beautiful wee-thing! Besides, when a member of the animal kingdom voluntarily picks YOU for a friend, - just live with that honour!
reply

The groundhog chose well - you were the perfect family for her! Like how you take care of many other animals and how your house is surrounded by nature.
reply

Of course she 'trusts' you! You all are the food supply of her dreams! A few moments of sucking up to humans & a lifetime of free GRUB!
reply

Too cute! She was probably abandoned. smart girly for following you home! So glad she did! Thank you for taking such good care of her!

What a ball of beautiful CHUBBINESS. I hope you are still Blessed with her presence. I know this is 2 years old.

If you see a wild animal approaching you, please first make sure it’s not rabid before you pet it or take it home.
reply

I love that she's essentially still living as a wild animal. She has just chosen to share her life with humans.
