In my opinion I think it because they are true friends and their friendship is stronger than evil but I also think it cause they are cousins so if Mal half hades then Uma the other half
So maybe they are related and maleficent must separated Uma and Mal when they were babies and she kept Mal and tried to make her be evil but she came out good I think Mal and uma are just friends they worked really well because the power of friendship I honestly don't know I'm really confused!
Let me know what u think could Uma and Mal be half Sisters or cousins?

Greek mythology got it right Poseidon is Ursula's father and Uma's Grandfather and Hades her uncle so Mal and Uma would be cousins possessing both halves of the powers of the ember combine them and maleficent's scepter would be no match and I love how the beast curse was already in the scepter and the sleeping spell from sleeping beauty it was only fitting audrey would cast those spells and they cleverly tied in True Love's kiss from Snow White and Little Mermaid

Mal hades hades brother triton is sisters with Ursula uma
So Ariel mal and uma are cousins witch means descendants takes place during the little mermaid witch means that Ursula and Uma can just swim through the barrier witch means triton and Ariel can swim through the barrier witch makes sence hades cant just walk through the barrier but he can keep it open if it is open

Or what if, when mal told evie that only the ember could break the curse of her being old was because it was done with maleficents septor, that would make sense because she is only halve maleficent so the other halve(hedis) could over power maleficents halve. If you wanna get technical, Hades is the brother of Poseidon, and techincally Poseidon's children are Ursula and Triton. That would make Mal the aunt of Uma, not cousin. It would make Ariel and Uma cousins.
