I don't naturally have highlights in my hair either, that was the point of my comment, is that you can still do it even if you have hair that is only one colour. Some times if i am not careful, and don't pay much attention, i do get a messy bun look, but i find if i do try hard on making it neat, i can get the rose shape.

I'm sure you've already done this some time in the past, but is there a teasing comb/instrument that you recommend (preferably on the cheap? When I try to tease nothing happens and I just get a flat static-y mess and I'm pretty sure it's because I'm using the wrong comb.

It looks perfect on your hair probably because you have highlights which give the rose shape dimension. If you don't have highlights like me you just end up with what looks like a messy bun unfortunately.
