How to Cure Gel Polish Correctly Do's and Don'ts for a Salon Finish

Today we re talking about gel polish and if it s cured or not. I have some tips to show you what I mean. I m going to start with base coat to show you what happens when you do a clients nail. I m doing a nice thin layer on all three of the nails. Make sure you cure this for 60 seconds in an LED Lamp and 120 seconds in a UV Lamp - for Urban Graffiti Base Coat. For my first nail I m using Serious Black. Serious Black is super pigmented so I m tempted to do a thick coat so I ll put that in for 20 seconds which isn t long enough. I m going to do a thin layer and then cure for 30 seconds because I have an LED Lamp. The one I haven t cured properly is now wrinkling at the side because it s not properly cured and the uncured bits are falling. I can just push the polish off the nail. I m going to do a thin coat and then top coat. With the good nail, you can see it s smooth, there s no bubbles or wrinkles and I can t scrape it off with a tool. Nail Nails have also brought out a hand sanitiser so you can clean your hands between clients, it also has some moisturiser in it. Make sure you still wash your hands every few clients as per government guidelines. I m going to show you red next with a nice thin layer. At 20 seconds cure time, I m going to do another layer and cure for 20 seconds again. You can now see that I can scrape it off, it s better than the thick black nail but it s still not perfect. I m going to so White now, I m going to do 2 layer, curing for 20 seconds and then apply Top Coat and cure for 20 seconds again. So the nail doesn t look too bad, it feels smooth but it s a bit sticky and a metal tool won t get into it. If I file, it s peeling off so uncured product is going everywhere which will irritate the skin which isn t good. In comparison, on a properly cured nail the dust is super fine and it s not flaking away, you can t scrape it off the same as will the un-cured nail. So, as you can see, you need to cure the nail properly for the time specified on the bottle so the gel polish stays on and so you don t irritate the client s hand when you file it off

A million years ago (well, about 15 years ago) I did a basic diploma in hair & beauty, and one of the biggest rules for normal nail polish was thin coats. Build your coverage with thin coats, otherwise it takes forever to dry & the client will have dings & chips. Gel is clearly the same, and cure time is soo important. I love how Naio put cure times on all their products

I have tried like 5 white gel polishes from different brands, I do the thinest layers and I cure it for 3 minutes/layer in UV, the base coat is cured completely, and it still gets wrinkled. None of my other colors do that, just the white. I don't get it why does this happen.

I do super thin layers on my black. The bottle says 30 seconds but it never fully cures so i do 60 seconds and wait. I have such a hard time with the black that ive got. And my top coat is so thin and floods at the cutical before i get it in the lamp.

The new top coat line is it supposed to be this thick? I have 2 bottles and paid over 50 for them cause of shipping but anyway I want my people that does my nails to use it on me. Just making sure it's supposed to be thick. It's the glitter one.

Makes sense. I've also had a situation where when I put on a base coat and let it dry, and applied couple of coats of color on top, but it remains tacky despite letting it cure. So this is very informative. Thanks!

I know it's an example of what not to do, but I love the patterns on some of these nails! It would be really cool to see nail art that is intentionally recreating the patterns (properly cured, of course; ) )

When I did my mums nails a while back I put gel polish on and then I put floral foil on the top and top coated it but it started chipping and peeling within a week. Any idea why?

I needed this! I m not a nail tech just interested in nails. Have a lamp and gel polish did my own the other night next day all lifting and peeled off wayyyyy too thick

This video explained ALOT. Turns out the salon I go to does not cure the gel fully because I ve experienced the first bad nail quite a few times.

I find that light colours cure faster than darker colours. But always follow the instructions, red and black I cure a few seconds longer.
