Join Carla Music in the Bon Apptit Test Kitchen as she makes baked eggs in tomato. The trick is getting the eggs cooked so that the whites are set and the yolks are still jammystarting with room temperature eggs is key, so soak them in hot water for a few minutes if they're cold from the fridge

I guess her fans feel Carla is cute. And funny. I think it's unnecessary to specify my own judgments. But, how can you do a cooking video without providing the amounts of the ingredients? She makes no mention of how much salt, or pepper, or basil, or chili flakes (although she does say it's pre-measured -- oh, yeah? How much. She doesn't even specify the total number of eggs (although she does recommend one or two per serving. I had to go back over the video to guesstimate, visually, the measurements. And, NO, the linked recipe does not help It's for a different recipe (actual shaksuka, with different ingredients. Extremely frustrating.

They mic'd the producer/director/camera man in this, and OH GOD does it make it HORRIBLE. Just shut up. I get it, others have done this cute, behind the camera person is a personality on the show kind of thing, but no, not here, not to my Carla. PS: Maybe we can get some production peeps, like editors, that actually like food? Seems they're constantly trying to me everything. And that's fine in some contexts Other shows do that well But it doesn't work with cooking, it doesn't work when you're trying to learn.

I didn't have everything on hand so I substituted a few things. Instead of olive oil I used heavy creamInstead of grape tomatoes I used just plain grapesI didn't have red pepper flakes so I crushed the red berries from a box of Cap'n CrunchI had eggs but they were hard boiled so I just dropped them inMy kids cried when they saw it. My wife said something about me not peeling the eggsThen the local mental health department came and took me away. again

Regarding the charades story. I remember once, I was in an acting class, and we were supposed to do a game of charades. Not sure why. But I got 'Friends' and drew a blank on how to act that out. But realized I could break it down to fri-end. True, it's not how it sounds, but it is how it's spelled. No one got it. But it turns out I was actually supposed to clap four times. I think the teacher was confusing charades with Name That Tune.

I made a variation of this recipe as huevos rancheros with chile peppers, hatch chili powder, onion, green onions, tomatoes, and parsley (didn't have cilantro. And then I added some black beans cause I like black beans (sue me, and added the eggs the same way and served over toasted tortilla. It's amazing. Highly recommend trying this out if you want more spice.

Growing up in a family of 8, dinners were naturally on the inexpensive side and large. Don''t know where it came from but, when my Mom had leftover spaghetti sauce she would poach eggs in it. They were served on toast topped with parmesan. If there's anything my ex's took away from our relationships it was this recipe. Now I'm teaching it to my grandkids.

I decided to make this just after watching and it was very good My only problem was not enough tomatoes, so the eggs were more fried than poached and there wasn't a whole lot of that tomato-y tang, but this is definitely one I'll come back to I think next time though I'll try it with a few more spices to make it more like shakshuka.
