Learn how to make Gefilte Fish from scratch. For a modern twist on an ancient recipe, we use salmon and cod Didi: If anyone wants fried fish balls, I recommend bolinhos de bacalhau. It's a Portuguese recipe but it uses mashed potato as a filler and they're deep fried. I bet you could even use dried instant mashed potatoes as the filler instead of mashed potatoes and they'd be delicious. Traditionally you're supposed to use salt cod. I personally have no experience handling salt cod but I can't imagine it's TOO too difficult. Anyway, it's worth a look.

I first saw the recipe for bolinhos de bacalhau an episode of Two Fat Ladies, which is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine! Not something I'd normally make. But I was at a Brazilian restaurant one time and saw them on the menu and had to try them. They were frackin delicious!
I'm definitely going to try this recipe though. My family fishes a lot and this would be a nice way to twist up the usual fried or grilled walleye and perch.

. if you're wanting to get rid of fishy (or garlicky) hands. try washing 'em with a stainless steel teaspoon - it gets rid of the smell! (haven't the foggiest how, though): )

Carp is VERY hard to find, during Passover most families just buy it from the grocery store. It's in that nasty gelatin stuff too bleh this looks way better!

I have always wanted to know how to make this. I love the two kinds of fish and the finished product looks absolutely AMAZING. I love fish so I know I will like this.

I never encountered gefilte fish with salmon until I moved to the US. It's weird to me, as it wasn't available to Ashkenazi jews, from whom the dish originated.

no way! who knew? I always chalked it up to something like pickled herring, (blech) mostly cuz of the gross jar. Thanks for schooling me today!

I had those in Puerto Rico, too. They're good. I think salt cod isn't hard, but requires lots of time for soaking, like 24 hours at least.

We actually talked about that in the video - the fact that they're traditionally made from only white fishes. Did you watch the video?
reply

Yeah, traditionally, it's cod, whitefish, and pike but we thought the salmon added a nice flavor. I think you could use any firm fish.
