Meet the Korean Women Freediving for Sea Urchin Vendors

Haenyeo, meaning women of the sea in Korean, are a dwindling group of mostly older, female divers who live and work on South Korea's Jeju Island harvesting seafood from the ocean. These older Korean women risk their lives each day harvesting sea snails and sea urchins to support their children and families. One haenyeo and restaurateur, Young Nam Kim, has been diving for over 40 years. At her restaurant, Gapadosiktak, she prepares some of the highest quality uni and abalone, or sea snails, for people in Seogwipo who have never tried them before. Note: Young Nam Kim's name is spelled incorrectly in this episode's contextual graphic.

Respect to these ladies. My Korean grandma is around there age. She is very good at cooking yet now days her limbs are becoming weaker due to old age. These halmeonnis are amazing and brave to be working this hard in the sea. I want to eat these so bad

Love a country without a social safety net. Its great if they do this because they want to, but lets be real, for most its a neccessity because otherwise they would starve. I dont see why this is celebrated, its just sad

That food at the end looks crazy good. I wish they'd have made golbaengi muchim.
There's also a great Korean movie called Bedevilled from 2010 that has Jeju Island haenyeo in it. Highly recommended flick.

When I lived in Seoul, I took a trip to Jeju. When I saw these ladies I first thought they were seals. These ladies are so legit and awesome. Such a cool thing to see.

It's crazy how these tasty things are considered pests. Pests we need to help eat so they don't destroy the ocean floors.
