Jin-Gyu learned the ancient art of onggi pot-making from his parents. Today, he is the youngest of about 20 people left in Korea who are certified to properly recreate traditional Korean onggi, a process which requires intense physical labor and adherence to traditional guidelines. The pots are used to hold kimchi, soy bean paste, red pepper paste, and other foods that require air to ferment, which the clay made from Korean rain water, plants, and mountain soil provides

Who would have ever imagined that white folks and non Asians would have ever ever welcomed Korean food and not have kept calling it backwards, dirty, unclassy like Japanese food, smelly and nasty? Guess it being almost all healthy has something to do with that?
After countless decades of white n other POC calling korean food gross, nasty, stinky.
Guess humans do really progress

Jokes on him, this Pot is originated from China, but they dont mind. Koreans are spamming Liziqi for making radish Kimchi cuz they think China wants to steal their culture, when actually no chinese cares about Kimchi cuz its just 1 variety of hundreds of pickled vegs they have. Pls respect each other and stop cyberbullying its really annoying

I saw a documentary about pottery to store food & the traditional Korean pot like this is the best kind to preserve food for fermentation needs. & Watching how it's made of, really satisfying especially when the maker is a passionate & friendly one like this man.

There are definitely way more than 20 people who can make Onggi by using coil building or slab stacking. I hate how Eater or other pretentious Western lifestyle media think its necessary to present Asian culture in some rarefied exotic manner.

I'm a Swedish potter. Korean ceramics in general and onggi in particular has had the most influense on me throughout my career. Keep up the great work, your tradition is the finest in the world in my opinion!

This is real. He is so excited, and he is willing to express how exhausting it is. Life is never 100% good or bad. This is his lesson that needs to be passed on from generation to generation.

These were extremely common before 1970 s, every household had 3-5 of them to store food. Then refrigerators quickly made them obsolete.

I would love to be his apprentice but I'm not Korean. I wonder if he would open his workshop for international students
