A look at Sylvia's Restaurant of Harlem and the legacy that a grandmother left for her prosperity. To say that Sylvias in Harlem is a landmark would be an understatement. When the late Sylvia Woods opened her namesake restaurant in 1962, she put in motion a legacy that continues today. From the Civil Rights movement to 9/11, Sylvias has served its customers as a place of community, gathering, and hope when they didnt know where else to turn. Sylvia herself believed and her granddaughter still believes that comfort and healing are cooked right into their fried chicken

ahhh mrs. sylvia. ja ja ja i remember when I was 15 she went to do some groceries for the restaurant in the Bronx terminal market at that time. she made me carry all her stuff including 2 100lb bags of rice. she didn't tip me and I was mad and she noticed, she tried to say something but my brother stopped her since they all knew her for not tipping and I was the only one that wanted to help her since no none else did. nice lady at the end.

Fun fact, y'all: It's 1. 6 miles, as the bird walks, from Sylvia's, in Harlem, to Rao's, in East Harlem, so about a half hour walk or a ten minute cab ride. Know what that means? If you had lunch at Sylvia's and you hit it off with a cute server and asked her out and she said yes and she was off work that evening, well, you could take her to dinner at Rao's that same evening, assuming you had a table there.

It's funny what she says Nothing soul food can't heal. In troublesome diplomatic situations between countries a well known technique is to put the coffee table in the middle between the to different sides, in a meeting. By doing so you force them to greet each other cause everyone loves coffee and food = making them talk. Food = loooveee

The main reason I keep reading her cookbook over and over is that she talked about family and home, things that are still very important to me even though I, m single and childless, and yes I, m still mourning her passing.

I think I found a good restaurant to visit when I take vacation to see the Jarrell Miller (Brooklyn) vs Anthony Joshua (UK) fight in June. I'm fat so this restaurant will make a few bucks off of me.

this was poorly produced. an 'eater' documentary should place more emphasis on the food. duh. when i went to sylvia's, i was underwhelmed. very basic, not very well seasoned food. meh.
