The Kara-age doesn't look at all crispy and the sauce probably made whatever crunch (and my excitement) disappear. A delicate crisp exterior accented with pearl white potato starch flakes completely encrusts golden chicken crackling which shatters and gives way to garlicky, marinaded, coin purse-sized piece of chicken thigh oozing with juicy chicken essence dripping onto a bed of steaming short grain rice and an occasional dip into a dish with Japanese mayo topped with chili power/roast black sesame seed is how I remember Karaage in the working class Shimbashi diners (where you buy a meal ticket from a vending machine near the entry door. As you enter all your senses are engulfed and you realize you have a lot in common with Pavlov's dog - tastebuds are suddenly electrified, while your stomach prepares for the holy grail of fried chicken. The five piece meal (about the size of a professional NBA athlete's palm) leans against a towering mound of ice cold, thinly shredded cabbage (don't forget to splash on tart sesame dressing) Simple and highly satisfying, especially with an appropriate karaage chaser - 1 liter Asahi Super Dry and a frosty glass cup.

So the proprietor is scared of sugar, but doesn't care about starch, fat, sodium or alcohol. hipsters are confounding. I'm cracking open a can of Pepsi while eating a cheeseburger and fries in protest of left wing hipster insanity. I'm going for a nightly curb session later with the crew, so I want some long lasting energy and fried food packs a ton of calories into a smallish meal. The Pepsi keeps me from falling asleep before the skating starts. 10pm is kinda late when you've already worked 8-10 hours. Punk is about liking what you like, not some diet plan or exercise program. Punk is not a far left political platform, the same as far right skinhead nazism is not punk. Politics are irrelevant to being a punk. Veganism, Hare Krishna and straight-edge are not punk. Punk is about enjoying your life, for better or worse, and not caring what others think of your choices.

Lucas, I love your videos. I'd love to meet you one day and just have conversations about cuisines (and other stuff. You seem like such a down-to-earth and genuine person. I watch your videos every time there is a new one and always feel so engaged! If you're ever in Dallas, I'd be happy to introduce you to amazing hole-in-the-wall type of restaurants and show you around neat little places. Happy Monday and please continue making great content. Love always, Ellen from Dallas.

The salad and that avocado looks real nice, I'm having my doubts on the karaage though. Looks too average. I'd rather have my breading on the karaage and have that satisfying crunch at the start. It was mentioned that karaage is often eaten while drinking so I don't see the problem with the food being a bit more greasy than usual.

Lucas seems like a very nice chill dude, but his reviews are a bit on the underwhelming side. I can only remember him actually expressing how much he enjoyed his food maybe twice. Otherwise he is just giving a report about the food in my opinion. The British host has the best expressions of all the Eater hosts.

For some reason, this video feels rushed. It looked like Lucas was rushing through his meals and talking faster then normal. Maybe the place was super busy and Lucas, being the gentleman that he is, didn't want to take up too much time? I still love watching you eat Lucas!

You guys, I love fried chicken! . But really, who doesn't love fried chicken? Tune in next week for more food that will not be fried chicken. Probably. Which is really too bad. Because I love fried chicken. Hugs and kisses, Lucas (IG: staletwizzlers Twitter: lucaspeterson)

There used to be a Japanese chain in NYC in the late 70's and 80's called Dosanko. They served fried chicken that was very good. They also served delicious dumplings. Their plum wine was good also. They also served noodle soup, but I don't remember it very well.

Lucas, I'm always impressed by the research you do. 5: 33 Yes, Aspergillus oryzae is found in soy sauce! Fun fact, it gets its name from the appearance of the mold under a microscope, which looks like the aspergillum, a tool used to sprinkle holy water.
