Steakhouses in New York tend to be institutions to hang out but the newest steak restaurant in town doesnt even have chairs. Ikinari Steak is a popular Japanese steakhouse chain where people stand as they eat, originally founded by beef obsessive Kunio Ichinose in 2013. In February, he debuted the first location in the U. S. in New York City. In this episode of Cult Following, host Serena Dai stopped by the East Village location of the restaurant to see what its like to eat at the standing steakhouse

A lot of hate for ridiculously superficial reasons. Sure there are valid complaints such as the issue with the condiment jars, but people are ragging on her like rabid dogs. For what? Her voice, appearance, and mannerisms. There's such a thing as diversity of expression too. Just because she doesn't look like or do things like the typical YouTube food host doesn't mean she doesn't present something of value. You're all way too biased to see it. I do think she's had a rough start but she's made major improvements over the course of her videos. People should give her a chance to grow and show her real potential rather than bully her out of existence on Eater. She's a person. Imagine being in her position, reading these disgusting and downright mean comments directed at you? For doing your job (and trying to improve at it, too.

The stand up restaurant is created for a purpose, not just because it is a Japanese thing. One of the reasons why Ikinari Steak has no seating is to keep the costs down. They can pack more people in this way. They can charge less for the meat. Just like with ramen restaurants, the Japanese salaryman can go in, order, eat, and leave in an efficient manner. Mentioned a bit already, I know. There are also stand up sushi and noodle restaurants, plus bars, too. Space is scarce, especially in Tokyo. Instead of using the condiment utensil to apply the wasabi and garlic directly to your food, please put it on the side of your plate or serving platter. I am sure other diners at that location have used the utensil on their own food, but this is a big NO NO. It's a public restaurant, not your home.

Normally Eater videos have a certain educational and aesthetic quality. I have to give this video a Big thumbs DOWN. This person is double dipping, spreading disgusting germs and a general lack of class with her attitude like she knows the Japanese corporate world. Steak in Japan is a lot more to this dull video - really an embarrassment to all the Eater productions.

after a few videos she has been in, you should find a new girl, Eater. she ordered it rare. of course it's fatty, you need to cook it a longer to render the fat. and the condiment thing that everyone else mentioned. love the other hosts. probably will stop watching her videos. you guys do awesome stuff by the way. keep em coming.

My family is from Poland, so maybe that's why I don't see horseradish as a weird condiment for meat. It's a really nice high note on a piece of rich, savory beef. Horseradish and eggs are made for each other. Personally I don't mind standing while eating, but not with something heavy like a steak. A sushi restaurant, sure.

The steak comes out incredibly slow during lunch rush. Not a place to eat if you only have an hour lunch break since the wait to be seated is long too. Also paying for your bill takes a long time since everyone pays for their steak separately to pile up steak mileage.

This lady has the personality of an overcooked steak. She ate the steak like a timid squirrel and went super ghetto on the communal condiments. She might as well have used her hands instead of utensils and gone all caveman on that dead cow flesh. YAWN!

There is something so unappealing about this woman. At first I just didn't get it. Then I watched it twice. Her hair is a rag mop. God damn it. Groom any? Her stringy hair hanging down all around her face makes the food look nasty and unclean.

mmm she gives off a vibe of not really a good eater and just chases a trend without the knowledge. Kind of like scraping the icing sugar on top of a cake without trying the cake. Maybe I'm just keen for a late night cake =P

I passed one or two in Japan. I initially thought its like for blind dating or speed dating since you stand and some stranger can be right across from you. Def a odd eating experience I would think but I never tried
