Houston's food scene is as diverse as they come, and in the heart of its Mahatma Gandhi district is Raja Sweets, one of the first Indian restaurants in the city. Watch as Chef Sheldon Simeon tries classic Indian sweets like jalebi and rasgulla and speaks to the family that has been making these recipes every day for 30 years

When you have like a gigantic family and every month is like this because of family reunions, weddings, engagements, birthdays and get togethers. The more things change, the more it stays the same. 20 yrs ago, we were kids and running around chipping off jalebi and laddoo piles while the grownups were making tea, cooking or having their drinks in their special corner. Fast forward 20yrs later, my children, nephews and nieces are running all over the place while chipping sweets off while we have our special corner. Only newest addition is a PS3 that hosts Battle Royals and such.

People who think Indian sweets are too sugary. because it is usually served with some savoury or spicy dishes which provide the balance. Just like how we have different spices it's not necessary that every sweet dish is made with sugar there are multiple options available out there

Such a great video to watch as an American born to Indian parents who visits Houston at times (relatives live here and Im pretty sure theyve taken me here before. Tbh I dont like Jalebi personally but Gulab Jamun, Ladoo, and Rasmalai are my weaknesses

Some of the pronounciations that she uses for these sweets is so off. It's amazing how you can be so far removed but still find a way to connect to your culture. She can still make it all from scratch

I LOVE the savory dishes of India but my experience with the desserts is that they are too sweet. Definitely a deeper concentration of sweet than my American palette is used to lol.

Are those candied black beans, powdered sugared orange trix, date-brownies, sugar free jellybeans, and candied spaghetti? They should come up with one that is flour soaked in sugar syrup!

Indian food AND sweets? I'd probably be there every day for 10 years too, haha. But, always funny how people who achieve the American Dream weren't afraid to work for it.

I m not sure about taste but the sweet which she serve in plate doesn't look yummy. Pakistani sweets are much better than it in Pakistan. Jalebi looks like so yummy
