I just love you to bits, honey, but if I put chocolate chips in there, we'd have us a situation. My mama would send me out to cut a peach switch for my grown-up butt and my siblings'd stop speakin' to me. That aside, you did everything right, although we sure didn't have banana liqueur. (Nanny did keep some blackberry brandy, though. Sometimes, she needed a little tonic)NEVER instant pudding, ya'll, and never whipped topping So disappointing when someone sets that sad situation down on the buffet. bless their hearts. We use a glass dish so that the layers show. Your rose-pattern meringue is real pretty, all toasted, although we like ours ice cold, with whipped real cream, which nobody in the history of ever has complained about.

Side Note: Someone said they're allergic to bananas. No problem; use something that works for you. 'Nana puddin' is just a variant of English Trifle, which was sometimes made with lady fingers, a little, capsule-shaped cake, much like madeleines, not that different from 'nilla wafers. (Hey, I'm a southerner, but that's the truth. Suck it up, honey. Better yet, do the reading) You can layer whatever you like with custard, cake and cream. Berries, peaches, even ice cream if you wait 'til it's cold. You could go all the way, and get that cake texture from the softened cookies with thin slices of pound cake. Don't let banana drama block your dessert nirvana.

I don't think I like the cookies in the pudding. I have had this before and that is my memory. My husband liked banana cream pie but there were just the two of us and I don't think that pie leftover is very good because the bananas get kind of nasty and the crust gets soggy. So I used a real rich (banana) cream pudding/pie recipe from another famous chef I won't name. I also made a rich, sweet European cookie/pie crust type pastry. The pudding part did well in the fridge. Each serving was a piece of the cooked pastry, pudding, a sliced fresh banana and real whipped cream.

I hate to admit it but it is true that the phrase Bless your heart is being used in a sarcastic way more and more in the South. Within the last decade or so. I'm not absolving myself I have used it in that way. I really hate that. It's not Southern. I've been using you poor thing as a substitute so that I can reserve bless your heart strictly as good tidings. It sounds like a small thing but it's very important to maintain some tradition of Southern heritage. Parents aren't teaching their kids anymore. It all starts at home.

I had most of the ingredients so I made it using large wafers. I will be getting the liqueur. made 1 basic. I am not a fan of choc chips yet I love biscotti so a light layer of crumbled amoretto replaced chips. 2nd ready to put in the oven. my desserts for the group dinner will be a welcome surprise. Thanks, Chef, I can always count on your recipes to surprise and delight coming from a novice cook. oh, and the liqueur one is for a few besties and a lovely cup of coffee lol

Georgia here. People are always saying that bless your heart is an insult. That's not always true. It's an expression of sympathy or even pity, so when it's warranted, it's kind. like when you see someone weeping miserably. But when the situation doesn't warrant it, it is indeed not a compliment. It means I pity you disguised in polite language, so it could mean you have my sympathy or it could mean you're pathetic, but I'm going to be nice to you for the sake of appearances.

My partner and I made this, and we actually found it too sweet to eat cold. When a portion is reheated in the microwave, the bananas also get nice and caramelized. She still doesn't like the mushy texture (could be because we had to make our own vanilla wafers and they turned into paste in the pudding, so now I'm experimenting with freezing it in tupperware and seeing if it makes a decent bananashortbread custard ice cream / iced dessert (despite the flour in the custard.

I made this today and i was surprised how fantastic it turned out to be. The custard thickened up so fast it almost turned into bread: D, luckily i whisked in a bit more milk and it solved the issue. Also, since chocolate tastes good with bananna, i decided to use chocolate wafers instead of vanilla. Thank you so much for the amazing videos chef john. as always, i enjoyed so much.

Chef John, oh mighty master of the chicken ragu that has changed my life, I don't know how to contact you. Please help. I am looking for a tasty go-to dinner dish using pork or chicken with very little salt or salty ingredients, if such a beast exists. Folks with bad tickers need to eat well too, and since you are my culinary hero, an idea from the superstar himself would be a tremendous gift.
