This super-simple custard tart recipe looks great, tastes amazing and is so quick to make; just cheat's pastry, vanilla custard and orange caramel. Jamie takes you through every step to success. Obrigado! This speedy recipe is from Jamie's 30 Minute Meals TV series first aired on Channel 4 in 2010. All the food made in this video was shared out and eaten among the very lucky crew. Nothing goes to waste. If you're in the UK or Ireland you can watch the whole series right here: Read the full recipe on page 122 of Jamie's 30 Minute Meals book. It only took less than 13 seconds to understand this was not going to be not even near a Portuguese Custard Pie. Caramel? Seriously! I love Jamie Olivier style and he does what look like delicious meals. This might even be a delicious dessert, but it's not even close to a Portuguese Custard Pie, except in shape (but it doesn't even look like the right type of dough. There are so many things wrong (for a Portuguese tart, that is) that even I, that don't know how to properly cook anything that takes more than 4 steps, can see the faults in here! The cinnamon should be a stick and cooked within the pudding, to give it flavour. The ground cinnamon is just to sprinkle on the top of the custard in the end. As for the filling it's way too whitish. Never ever use the white part of the egg, separate the yolk and use the yolk only in this type of pudding-filling. It will taste way different too. The brownish-golden look on the top of the real custards is not becasue you put meted caramel on top of them but because they get golden inside the oven. Again, this might be a great tasting dessert, but it's NOT a Portuguese Custard Pie. Look around Youtube for Pastel de Nata to see other videos. Almost any other video is a more true-to-the-real-thing than this.

omg seriously people. Jamie wasnt doing the authentic Portuguese Custard Tart (Pastel de nata) he was doing something simple quick and that still has the taste of something similar to the Portuguese Custard Tart. Like seriously people grow up. I have tried this recipe and can tell you my friends here on youtube it is awesome and tastes sensational. You are all jealous for the fact he is creative and adventurous chef. Stop knocking him. Praise him. I love your recipes Jamie Oliver and I love what you give us to try etc. God Bless you and your beautiful family. Cheers from all the way down under Sydney Australia

guys i think they're just Portuguese inspired. Whatever, they look good Could you use yogurt instead of creme fraiche? i still don't even know if you can get creme fraiche in the US EDIT: I used greek yogurt instead of creme fraiche and it worked great. also, apparently we don't have puff pastry here -_- I ended up using normal premade pie crust. it was still good, but the puff pastry looks way better and easier to manage. on the bright side, since the crust came in a two-pack, i ended up with 12 instead of 6! my folks loved it too.

Just made these - terrible on every level - I knew they would not be authenticate but I did expect the recipe to work If you're going to use puff pastry at all (not traditional) it must be rolled really, really thinly - my first batch came out with soggy bottoms and mainly pastry following Jamie's mold with your fingers method. The caramel on top is a horrible addition too- chewy and gets stuck in your teeth. Jamie this is dreadful! I have a dinner party in a couple fo hours - think you owe me a batch of decent custard tarts lol

Why be offended? Didn't he said it's JAMIE'S Quick Portuguese Custard tart? That indicates Jamie's style/method of whipping up the recipe. Its surely his own creation. Need no offense. Keep an open mind. It's appalling to criticize a great chef. Have some respect. He's been around. The problem of today in this world is people has lost respect even to their ownselves. How sad! And I certainly need no rebuttal, just please respect or at least learn to respect. Thank you.

Funny it is. I grew up eating the Portuguese custards in Macau (coz' I grew up in Hong Kong, they were so delicious. Until years ago, I went to Portugal and found that they serve the custards everywhere as cold deserts. I was a bit disappointed. One of the best goals in the trip was to look for hot delicious custards, and i ended up loved those in Macau so much more. No offense, I love Portugal very much, Lisboa, Porto, Faro, etc!

Hahahaha I think your fabulous Jamie, I have just watched many Protuguese tart blogs. maybe authentic but all were difficult to make, havng to make your own puff pasty. and yes may not be authentic, but I love that you make it so easy! I am going to try both ways as soon as I have time. then have friends some family over to taste tests Lol Thanks you so much I love your enthusiasm it's Wonderful.

The video clearly indicates it is Jamie s QUICK version of the pasteis de nata. it does not mean it is the original, true recipe. just an adaptation. Personally, I find that anything that is quick and cuts corners gives in the end an average product. However, for some people following a recipe that is complex, will not incite the person to try to cook especially newcomers. So this could be a start.

Attention urchins; this baked, dessert/snack is titled; Jamie's QUICK Portuguese Custard Tarts. 1) Did everyone get the Quick part? 2) Anyone see Jamie whip out the all-butter puff pastry? 3) Notice as that puff pastry got crop-dusted with powdered cinnamon? Could YouTube s dower sullen whiners ever, endorse a creative twist on a classic, historic or traditional recipe?

An authentic Portuguese Tart is a lot more work, I tried the traditional way once and it was more work but worth it. This way produces something similar and tasty too, just quicker and easier for those of us who do not have the time or do not have enough eggs etc.
