Last year when I did a visa run to Malayasia from The Philippines I used a Lowepro 300 Highline series which is very light it carried My 13laptop and has a pocket for all the chargers and has a picking cube and a clear seperate pocket for toiletries, the bag has 2 main compartments a main compartment which opens right out and smaller admin pocket with seperate pockets its made from water resisistant material with built in rain cover it also has a seperate laptop compartment which suspends your laptop from hitting the Ground it has YKK zips which are lockable and of high quality, your right Mark people carry way to much stuff much of which you can get quite cheaply wherever you Go especially in south East Asia, things like T shirts and shorts I do carry a small Travel towel which drys very quick. This bag is so compact it fits nicely under an aircraft seat. Also I never put My wallet or Travel docs or passport in My backpack I usually have a Travel sleveless jacket with 9 pockets. O also carry immodium in case of stomach upsets

i saw a lot of comments on laundry. he is mostly travelling in cities and every city big or small have laundry detergents. just as he said people have similar needs as you maybe in some very remote jungles who still hunt and gather to survive might not have the brands of laundry detergents that we usually use but they too have some ways of cleaning up if your clothes are not too soiled a good rinse in plain water also is good enough. I would just add one more thing to the list, a 10 ft nylon rope to hang your washed clothes on. it really helped me when I travelled. tying the ropes to the racks or curtain rods in hotel rooms while you sleep helps them dry out by morning pretty well. hardly takes any space.

Put labels or tags on your various cords - as they tend to look a bit alike. If you are not using your electronics, get a ziploc bag, or a sturdy plastic box with latch (like Glad-ware) to put the electronic stuff into, so it stays organized. If you have checked luggage, put a few articles of clothing in your carry-on stuff, just in case. If you are not working, just being a tourist, and you can afford it, an iPad with keyboard case. Why? TSA and other security folks do not make you take your iPad out of your carry-on, but they will your laptop computer. I do not know why and I do not care, but I will take advantage of it. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I don't bring jeans: they're heavy, unsuitable for tropical weather, and take forever to dry. I bring earplugs (useful to muffle snoring or chatting roommates, early morning calls to prayer, crowing roosters, barking dogs, traffic sounds, an inflatable pillow (for nights sleeping in airports or to supplement crappy hostel pillows, and a driver's license (for scooter rentals, etc. Socks and underwear: I take 4 pairs along. 3-4 shirts, 2 pants. 1 pair of shorts. All made of quick-dry material. I hate washing clothes every night, plus a lot of hostels don't like you doing your own laundry; they want you to use their services.

For me I carry a large military back pack that's bigger than Marks back pack and place the camera bag inside the back pack so I'm carrying one container, rather than two. It still fits in the over head carry on in the airplane so it's still relatively light traveling. In my opinion, this is slightly better because if I have to bring home a bunch of souvenirs, it will easily fit in my back pack as long I remove my camera bag from the back pack and carry it separately. As a bonus, the military back pack looks cool but Mark's method is great too.

I would have some plastic bags small and medium for the odd wet towel. or dirty clothes. and also handy for passport etc. if it rains, and one more bag to slip over the backpack or a poncho. I like to carry one money belt under the pants and a spare. I also, like to have a small alarm clock. though I guess mobiles do that now and more like a torch. I do not pack as light. and have not found it a problem. Also, i need to bring enuf clothes as buying them in my size is nigh impossible. But yeah. good advice. you look neat and compact.

this is why i love to watch your shows and i mean over and over again. For beginners this video puts packing into a really easy context. i have seen travellers with HUGE backpacks here in San Diego they usually stay at our hostels and i always think we do have a 99 cent store and the hostels offer soap and other toiletress for dirt cheap. i know women are the main culprits of packing too much. Keep doing videos please and i will be asking for your tshirt from my wife for christmas lol

By the way iPad is a great accessory for maps, navigation and books etc. No need to carry books anymore. One electronic gadget I carry with me now is an airport express. This allows me to very quickly transfer pics etc from iPhone to my MacBook Air/External HDD. Plus I also now use a memory card with wifi built in for my camera. Sensational.

Hi Mark, as always - your videos are informational and inspiring in ways that it allow those without the knowledge to at least experience the great adventure the world has in store for us. One thing tho I am unsure of, where would you suggest a person store their passport and back up credit cards? I have read and heard so many suggestions from storing cards in your shoes, in your socks, in a zippered pocket inside a jacket, etc. what would you suggest?
