Som Tam Pu Maa ) is one of my favorite Isaan restaurants in Bangkok. Get more details here - Though it's located a little outside of central Bangkok, on the Thonburi side of the city, one of my all time long standing Thai Isaan food restaurants in Bangkok is Som Tam Pu Maa. Before, I previously lived in the area, so I would eat there quite frequently, but since I don't anymore, anytime I'm in the area I make a pitstop. For this particular meal, we ordered up a feast that included some of the best tasting dishes from this fine Isaan restaurant. There's both a downstairs and an upstairs to Som Tam Pu Maa, the upstairs only used when the downstairs is full, and there's an air-con on the upstairs floor as well. All the cooking, like most common Thai restaurants, happens on the bottom floor at the entrance to the restaurant. We began things off with the pla pao, which is a roasted snake head fish. The fish is first stuffed with lemongrass, and then covered on the outside in salt before being roasted over charcoal. The result is an immaculate beauty where the fish stays moist on the inside and just slightly salty from the skin. The real bonus at Som Tam Pu Maa, and one of the reasons it's one of the best Thai Isaan food restaurants in Bangkok, is their incredible sauces. The roasted chili sauce, which reminds me of Mexican chipotle, is particularly outstanding. After the fish, I then took a bite of the Kaeng Om, an extremely herbaceous and fresh soup made with lots of vegetables and herbs. Cooking on a high heat fire, the soup cooked extremely fast so all the vegetables were still crispy and flavorful and not overcooked. It's another common Thai Isaan food dish. I've been a huge fan of larb pla duk ) ever since I came to Thailand, but few other Isaan restaurants debone the catfish body, and then re-attach the head to serve it. Everything is a trophy at Som Tam Pu Maa. The larb pla duk ) is extraordinary at this restaurant. They use just the right amount of spice and herbs to accentuate the smoky flavored fish. Another favorite of mine is the yam makua yao, which is a roasted eggplant salad that's mixed with minced pork and boiled egg before being dressed in lime juice and fish sauce. Another winner We did order a plate of som tam thai, but I won't even get into that as it's the most common Thai Isaan food dish available. We also ordered yam pla duk foo, a fluffy deep fried catfish that's served with a marvelous sour green mango sauce. Anyway, the Thai Isaan food at Som Tam Pu Maa ) is absolutely extraordinary Som Tam Boo Maa Restaurant 25/48 Thanon Charan Sanitwong, Bang Khun Non, Bangkok 10700 Tel. 0-2822-3577 Hours: 11: 00 23: 00 25/48, , 10700 . 02-8823577 11. 00 - 23. 00

Mark, great video love it, this restaurant is going on my number one priority in August. I'm hoping to stay for 6 months on a budget of 20000 baht per month including accommodation in the bang kapi area of Bkk. Do you think this is possible? im staying close by to friends who have a restaurant serving Southern (Hat yai) Thai food, off lad prao road. Need to be in one of your videos so you'll be getting an invite to try some home made food. Keep up the good work.

I am a fussy eater and struggle to stomach Thai dishes. Never-the-less how can you order all that food and still be slim ha ha ha. Keep the videos coming. I loved Thailand. Will always be very fond of the place despite always finding scams. 4 days since returning home from first visit I am already planning to return in a few weeks time. During the wait I am going to start learning Thai and will make more an effort to try the Thai dishes.

Hi Mark. I was in BGK last week, and went to this restaurant (as well as many other food streets you suggest. Thanks to the thai adress you provide in your book and the perseverence of the taxi driver, we eventually found it: ) IT WAS UNFORGETTABLE I had a paper print of your book page about the menu set you suggest. They laughed a bit: ) Anyway, it's really worth going there. The catfish salad is one of the best things I've ever tried.

Just wanted to say that this is absolutely the best restaurant I went to in BKK. The Nam Tok Pla Chon Tod was phenomenal. However, the foreigner menu does not have prices. And when we received our bill, all of our prices were far higher than anything written in the thai menu. So we ended our absolutely delicious meal on a bit of a sour note.

Thanks a lot Yes I was in Singapore for a few days a few years ago before I was making any videos, and yes I would love to return again. I've been meaning too, just have been so busy that haven't come yet. Are you from Singapore? And by the way, I do love the food in Singapore too

Hey Mark. I lived in Taiwan for awhile, and when I came back to the states, I realized that American Chinese food wasn't authentic Chinese style at all. I was wondering if you've experienced the same kind of thing when you tried Thai food here in the states?

I am so jealous I wish I could be in Thailand right now I'm sure that thai food over there are so authentic and delicious compare to ones in the state. And of course the price is much more cheaper over there Can't wait to go back next year Thanks for sharing

Those dishes look proper and amazing. My friends and I were talking the other day that no matter what part of Thailand you're from, when you live abroad, Isaan food will be what you miss the most. For me, it is what the taste of Thai food is all about.

Where's the. Chinese dim sum gets delivered all at once on the center of your table unlike in the USA where the tables walk around and you select there's also a show that goes on I think you miss out on one of these great things in Thailand
