my Jakarta travel guide for food lovers: Ikan bakar, or grilled fish, has been one of my favorite Indonesian foods to eat ever since I tried it for the first time years ago. To make ikan bakar, the fish is often butterfly cut, then a sauce is brushed onto the fish, and then its grilled over a very hot fire. The key is using a very hot charcoal fire. This way the fish cooks really fast and has a wonderful smoky flavor, but the flesh of the fish remains juicy and not overcooked. Ikan bakar is incredibly delicious. Gebang Seafood 49 Restaurant From the Mangga Besar area, we walked to a restaurant called Gebang Seafood 49 Restaurant to get some Indonesian seafood dishes, and to especially eat some ikan bakar. The menu was all in Bahasa Indonesia, but the menu was pretty simple - you could basically choose your different type of seafood - fish, squid, shrimp, or shells, and they would cook it for you in a number of different ways. Ikan bakar can refer to any type of fish, but they had about six different types of fish to choose from, and so I ikan bawal, which after doing some research, I think is black pomfret. Again, the fish was butterfly cut, then brushed in a yellow sauce, and grilled over hot charcoal. The fish itself was delicious, nice and flaky and moist and the sauce was filled with turmeric and salty with a tinge of sweetness. In addition to ikan bakar, I also ordered cumi saus Padang (Padang sauce squid, squid with Padang sauce, which is a hot and sour sauce thats very tangy. It was also delicious. And finally, I ordered kangkung cah (stir fried water morning glory, stir fried water morning glory with shrimp paste I think. The side dishes went well with the ikan bakar. Gebang Seafood 49 Restaurant Address: Jalan Hidup Baru / Kalimati, Jakarta Pusat, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia Open hours: I think from about 5 pm - midnight daily, its a street food tent so hours may vary Total price for everything - 180, 000 IDR (13. 77) Jakarta Travel Guide of Food Lovers

probably you are looking for seafood 21 not gebang seafood. it's about 300 meter apart from gebang. the taste is same since the owners came from same region i guess. Next time for seafood in jakarta i recomend pangandaran seafood or wiro sableng 212 both in kelapa gading region, but for pangandaran they have a branch restaurant at sunter region. Anyway, thx for appriciating Indonesian foods, it's a diamond in culinary world and you just help it shine

Hi Mark, I'm British-Chinese and planning to move (with my Thai wife) and work in Jarkata with my company. I wondered if you could you and your wife could provide some insight into the differences in terms of what you experienced in Jarkata and what you know of back in Bangkok. Is it warmer/more humid than Bangkok? is the food spicier? worse traffic? Any insights would be much appreciated, especially on food related matters: )

it's kinda sad that you didn't have the chance to eat at the best restaurants in Indonesia. the next time you come here, please do try Ikan Bakar Djimbaran (grilled fish from Bali) and nasi campur Bali too (definitely best of the best. Oh don't forget Mie Aceh Bang Jaly too (Aceh style noodle) very delicious and those food are spicy so i guarantee you'll like it

omg that bite with sambal kecap, that must had been spicy. fyi mark, that black saus (sambal kecap) is made from kecap manis, raw pepper and the lime makes it more liquid. Its the best combined with ikan bakar, but it can burn your tongue if you put too much on your fish. i can see you liked the food, great video

Love your videos. How long did it take for your stomach to get to used to the street food? My last trip to Bali, I had Babi Guling at a road side restaurant, and while it was amazing. I was violently ill for 9 days. Even needed antibiotics. Headed back in a few weeks, and wonder if I can attempt the street stall.

Next time you're going to Indonesia, don't forget to try the Ikan Bakar Dalam Bambu. it's a big catfish slowly grilled inside bamboo with a lot of flavourful spices which is traditional cuisine from Borneo. You're gonna like it Keep up your good work, can't wait to watch another video.

Hey Mark I just wanted to know. Why dont you mix that rice nicely with the curry? May be it's the way in Indonesia and I'm not aware of it probably. What I feel is that since the rice is dry, you wouldn't get the exact tate if you don't mix it up with the curry well.

I prefer the one next to it, 94 Mulyono Kalimati. They have a super deep fried breaded calamari that 1 plate is never enough. Also, their black pepper crab and padang sauce crab are too die for Maybe next time: ) A reason to come back to Kalimati area; p
