I tried this restaurant and this fish head curry because of this video. I think this is overrated. I think the curry is not bad but not good either, and it's not that good that you have to pay more than 300k IDR (27 USD) just to eat half of the fish head (the largest size. They split the fish head in the middle so they can get 2 portions from 1 fish head, because of that the fish meat inside the head just lost due to the cooking process, so you have the fish bone more than the meat and of course you cant eat the bones. I went there with my other 6 friends and all of them also disappointed, and they also viewed this video. I dont blame you Mark, but I think for Indonesian that want to try this restaurant, its just not worth your time and money.

Mark, I live in Jakarta and we know this famous Gulai Head Fish in Medan Baru Restaurant. This is well known that this menu is made from cannabis leaves/seeds, because it is normal in North Sumatera and Aceh to use cannabis for the food herbs. We know this is true in North Sumatera, but we don't know in Medan baru (now, maybe many years ago they had it, but I am not sure for now. Their fish head gulai are good, very fresh and taste very very light curry taste.

Mark, next time in rumah makan padang, you don't have to eat everything they serve to you. They will pile everything they have on your table, even you don't order them. And most tourists think they have to eat them all and make them pay for everything (which are not cheap. It's like a trick for tourists to get them pay more, for the dishes they don't order, thinking that they have to eat them all.

Just found this video and bring back my childhood memory of the neighborhood in this area. Cause few house down the road from the restaurant is where I was born & live and across the street from the restaurant is where my uncle live till now. I also have a very fond memory of buying take away & eating padang food from this restaurant. And my favorite dish is their chicken curry

Funny thing, at 9: 12 when you describe the tempe goreng sambal 'cause you forgot to mention those little anchovies. It was funny because the video keep focusing on the sambal with those little fishes eyes keep looking at the camera for recognition. It's a very small fish so I guess it's kinda hard to recognize. Good video

Not sure if you made a video of this already, but RAWON is a must. A place 3 hours outside of Surabaya pass the lumpur lapindo accident place, you will come to a small town known as Jember. Visit a place called depot Bu Darum. They serve mighty delicious rawon. Of course you can find that almost everywhere around Java.

medan baru is famous for their fish head curry and fried pigeon while garuda is more famous for their fried chickeni go to both quite often when i visit Jakarta and i'd have to say that all unfinished food goes back to the pot for the next visitors, so essentially everyone is eat leftovers haha
