CHIANG RAI, THAILAND - Welcome to Lanjia Lodge in the mountains, near the Mekong River, in the remote far northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand. Lanjia Lodge is an eco lodge that supports the local hill tribe village community - and there are two main people ground, the Lahu, and the Hmong people. While staying at Lanjia Lodge, we arranged one day to visit the Hmong village where the Shaman and his family invited us for a huge celebration local meal. Now I ve had Hmong food before a number of times, but this was by far the most extensive and diverse Hmong meal I ve ever had. Hmong are known for being hard workers, their amazing farm practices, and sometimes their simple - yet fulfilling food. It s not uncommon to have a Hmong meal that includes boiled vegetables and rice. But today was something truly special and magnificent, a Hmong celebration feast! Just to name a few of the dishes this amazing Hmong family made - roasted duck, pounded green taro stems, an herbal mixture with chicken organs, black chicken soup, boiled black chicken, boiled pumpkin, Hmong chili dip, and Hmong rice - which is a high mountain growing variety of Hmong rice. We also had a chance to see some of the food being prepared. I was especially fascinated by the pounded green taro stems. I ve had green taro stems before, but usually cooked. This was my first time to eat them raw and pounded into a chili dip. It was sensational, life changing to be honest. The entire meal was outstanding, so fresh, so natural tasting - and quickly to mention that just about every single food we ate and ingredient was from the mountain grown and raised by them. The flavors were vibrant, everything tasted so natural and real. The black chicken was slightly chewy and full of flavor, the duck was marinated and roasted. And all the natural vegetables like the pumpkin were maximum sweetness. The chili dips were outstanding. It was a meal I will never forget, and thank you to this amazing family for their hospitality! Another great part of this Hmong village food experience is that by staying at Lanjia Lodge and by arranging local tours like this, you are able to directly support the community through community tourism. Huge thank you to Lanjia Lodge for arranging this. Highly recommended. The lodge is incredibly beautiful and relaxing. We loved our stay

Cooking rice this way is time consuming, it's hard labor and take lots of experience in order for the rice to turn out good and when it's cooked the quality and taste is way better than using the rice cooker. In the Hmong culture after a woman give birth to her baby, the only things that she'll eat during her 30 days after giving birth is nothing but rice, boiled chicken with herbs and hot water. This supposed to cleanse her body. She'll have a longevity and healthy life when she's older. For men; well chicken boiled with Hmong herbs are supposed to make a man strong both for his health as well as for a man's stamina. These kinds of food are only served on special occasions because people are poor and can't afford to eat good food like this everyday. The rice water or boiled pumpkin is to cleanse the body after you had a good meal.
The chicken leg that she gave it to Mark is only serve to a special guest or a child that they love dearly so Mark is their special guest that's why she personally put it on Mark's plate and gave the bowl to him (it's part of the Hmong culture. When they were eating, she told Mark that when her husband and her were out in the field farming they don't get to eat anything else but rice and some boiled vegetables.

That s title tho. ghost doctor food. So incorrect and slightly offensive. Shamans are respectable figures and leaders in the Hmong culture and calling it ghost doctor demeans its value. Also seems like it pokes fun at it a bit. Mark, I know you mean well and I watch all your videos bc you are always so respectful of cultures. Please consider changing that title.

The fresh herbs are the best of the dishes. I go for those too when my eat food with lots of herbs. The black chicken is supposedly have softer meat to eat. Hopefully they put the chicken herb in the delicious chicken soup. Pepper is a must. Different Hmong clans eat different things. Hopefully you get to try them all.

Nyob zoo Mark! Awesome to see you visited my Hmong people. I was born in Laos but moved here to the US when I was 4 yrs old. It's so great that people are visiting and acknowledging more of our Hmong. Perhaps when you are in the US again, you can visit a Hmong American household to try our food here! Thank you for this video!

Yep! Nailed it. From how the rice is being cooked to drinking the rice water, the spicy tomato chili to the raw spicy elephant ear chili dip. The common herbal chicken soup to the chicken organ salad. Especially the boil squash lol. Fresh killed chicken is so hmoob.

In Hmong, the chicken thighs and legs are considered the best part of a chicken. So parents usually gives that part to their loved on. If you re lucky to get a chicken thigh and leg, you re considered the favorite, respected, loved, and LUCKY.

Hello my friend. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video of an incredible area, its temples and traditions, gastronomy and locals, they are great. My favorite is the blue and white temple. Amazing.

Rice cooked in this process boils off all the toxins. My mom used to cook rice this way until we got a rice cooker. Traditional rice cooked this way taste so much better. Yes! Ultimate comfort food!

You probably missed it but the auntie presenting you the drumstick is a sign of respect for you. Meat is scarce and they don t eat their poultry everyday. You re a lucky man
