Unagi ) is freshwater eel and its a real delicacy in Japan. There are many many restaurant dedicated to serving only unagi, and in Tokyu you have plenty of choices. Thanks to my friend David I went to Obana Restaurant ) which is a very highly rated, some say its the best, unagi in Tokyo. What I like about Obana Restaurant ) is that there are no reservations, so its first come, first serve, and its one of the classic Japanese food restaurants where you have to arrive early and wait in line for a chance to eat this legendary unagi. I arrived about 1 hour early, and already there were 20 people in the line in front of me. The wait was quite interesting, because as I was standing in line, a festival parade came walking right past. The restaurant is within an old style Japanese building, with tatami floors, and you sit on the floor with a low table. They first steam the eel, and then grill it, and serve it in the lacquered box the traditional Japanese way. Ive had unagi before, but nothing compared to this unagi. It was absolutely exquisite, the most buttery perfectly cooked unagi Ive ever had. Also, I liked how the sauce glaze was not overpowering like it sometimes can be, but it was light and just accented the wonderful eel. Obana Restaurant ) is not cheap, but the quality you get is mind-blowing. Obana Restaurant ) Address: 5 Chome-33-1 Minamisenju, Tokyo 116-0003, Japan Total price: 13, 824 JPY (124. 78)

Hey Mark This is Taka from Japan. Unaju is definitely one of my most favourites, although the price of the eels in Japan has rocketed due to the recent fall of their yield. Anyway, when it comes to eels, there are actually two different styles of preparation here in Japan. One is the Kanto style (the East Japan style. This technic is widely used in Tokyo and the surrounding areas. The other is the Kansai style (the West Japan style, which is very typical around Osaka and Kyoto. Kanto style eels are firstly cut open from the top side of the fish, gutted and then steamed. After that, they are grilled on charcoal, brushed with the house special eel sauce. Whereas Kansai style eels are cut open from the belly side and then go straight onto the chargrill, without the steaming process. While you can enjoy the butteriness and the melt-in-your-mouth texture from the Kanto style, the Kansai style allows to to enjoy the meatiness and the sweet fattiness of the fish. I personally prefer the Kansai style since I like the meaty texture of the eels. I think you gotta come here again and make your own judgement.

hey Mark I love your show I'm thinking about doing the blog myself and it's about senior citizen helping people I just watch a series a few minutes ago and I seen where you was eating some eel if I'm not mistaken and you said you paid 13, 000 for that meal I was like shocked I don't know how the way prices goes in those kind of foreign countries I have traveled out to some foreign countries but I have never paid for anything over 13, 000 in specially a plate I was just thinking why would you pay that much money for a plate

They have stopped serving grilled eel in South Africa, because the item is just not profitable, and production is almost a nightmare. No sushi house will sell it, as it is expensive and here the culture (African, as you may have it) hardly sustains it. Man how I miss eating eel nigiri - this is a memorable video for sure.

i know this is an old video, but Mark seriously, you need to work on that oh my god so delicious face, if you make that face 80 % of the time you eat some thing, the expression looses its value, and the validation in provides for a truly amazing tasting/textured food. just my 2 cents.

one advise mark, as you know asians dont like to put white clothing towards the head cuz it means that your family related has passed, so sometimes at the video people look you differently cuz you are protecting yourself from sunlight, but i can be disrepectful.

5: 28As to cooking method, it differs depending on the area. In eastern part of Japan, it's grilled, steamed and grilled again; in western part, it's not steamed. When you eat grilled eels in western part of Japan, you can experience different texture

Ok who is reminded of the word unagi in friends lol. Unagi (ross version): a total awareness, that u can up against any danger that might fall upon you. Unagi (rachel version): it's kind of sushi. Unagi (pheobe): it is fresh water eel

5: 44 They would grill it, then steam it, because of the fat, then dip it into a sauce (or maybe before) and then grill it again. But I am not 100% sure, but I think it starts with grilling and ends with grilling.
