Yeah, I would not be a diver of any kind. Especially not one catching food. Why? Great White sharks. How many people have been diving for urchins and have ended up in the mouth of a great white. The one guy was only saved by the fact that his dive vest was made of lead and the shark could not chomp down on him though he was head first in its mouth. NOPE! I'll let others go and catch my seafood, thanks.

In hawaii we call them wana (vah-nah. They're all over the coast. I remember going to the beach with my family often and my dad would pick them while in season and we'd eat them. The right time to pick them would be in monthd that end with -er- September- December. To take of the spines we would put them in a milk crate then rapidly shake the crate in the ocean.

Haha! I got a good look at all of the people in line at the seafood market in Newport Beach. Almost every single solitary person in line was Asian. That's funny. It makes perfect sense though, I lived in Thailand for 16 years and there's nothing that they love more than getting to the markets in the middle of the night to get the best of the products.

This Maori would go dive for his own kina in the states. -I'm thinking they don't taste as nice as the ones in New Zealand. -And they don't taste the same. -Different areas different taste. -So it's a unique flavor the man vessel that said mermaid taste like kina. ditto I've eaten hundreds and thousands didn't touch the sides. -Thanks for sharing

Wow! They discovered sea urchins in California, these morons out there were killing these urchins awhile back because he sea urchins were eating the kelp at the sea bed until someone told them that these were an edible sea creature. Sick minded Californians as usual! In the Mediterranean people have been eating these since Adam And Eve!

Sea urchins are pretty badass, they're essentially starfish that have turned themselves into a ball of spikes, what's also impressive id the person who decided to crack one of them open and ate whatever slimy goop was inside it. ------And later the person who invented the tool to help obtain the slimy goop more efficiently -

Is this regulated? seems like she is raping the sea floor and wasting lots of urchins to find her right ones. I don't like the fact that she didn't talk about sustainability or replanting or refurbishing the areas she rakes up.

I live in sunny England and once caught a London urchin hiding behind a bin, The court said killing our urchin's is cannibalism and murder, Do you have this problem in California. All replies to the London hospice secure unit.

Thank you for helping consume urchins. We know today that they are overpopulating and destroying our kelp fields. It would be sad to see all the creatures that use these kelp fields for safety to disappear.
