The journey starts in Oslo where we meet our host Halaigh Whelan-McManus at Maaemo, the three-star Michelin restaurant where he works as a souschef. After talking to his boss about the wonders of Norway-s nature and culinary potential - and having a chat with locals about what Norwegians really like to eat (yes, you guessed it, frozen pizzas, Halaigh heads to the west coast to go diving for some of the world-s most sought-after scallops. After eating raw, live scallop on the boat, the fishermen invite Halaigh back for a home-cooked feast with scallop gratin, bacon-wrapped scallops and plenty of cold beer. Further down the south-coast, in Stavanger, we get a sample of what happens when these scallops get into the hands of a sushi master. At sushi restaurant Sabi Omakase, head chef Roger Asakil gives Halaigh a lesson in how to cut fish, before treating him to sushi made with a local twist, including smoked reindeer heart

Asians eat the fringe and orange roe. It seems offensive to those who usually dine on the center muscle itself but if you've ever had preserved scallops from Japan or Korea, you wouldn't waste the whole body. We don't mix the central scallop from the fringe of course. We do know where the -filet mignon- is but traditionally, we make do and try not to waste. Fresh scallops from the water is about as pure and as good as you can get. They don't carry the parasites that even high end sushi quality fish do. Because they filter, the meat is sweet, sometimes crunchy and good without anything but the sea water.

if I travel outside of japan, germany, austrilia, and vietnam, i'm pretty much just asking for trouble, what with the global collective conspiring to derail me and stop me and put my ass in jail for the next 5 years. what with the global collective NO -IN-. so no. not traveling abroad to norway. just going to tokyo, japan for business. until that war break out. the rest of the world oppose me and is conspiring to stop me.

I know nothing about diving, but why does he have a air tank and what looks like a air line diving with him? I don't see what the big fuss is about scallops. I dated a girl that loved them I couldn't understand it. The outside of Frank's look strange to me. It look's like a barn with odd size windows and placement. My girlfriend would say hell no lol. Dude you went a sushi place in Norway?

Great host! Refreshing to see a younger chef that-s not a hipster who-s too full of themselves on Munchies. I-ve never thought about it much but Norway has great conditions for developing a strong sushi scene in its restaurant industry.

Come to Maine for scallops. They'll knock your socks off. The hardest part of catching them is shucking them into the bucket and not your mouth. - If be willing to bet I've eaten the value of a truck in missed wages from picked seafood. -

I do enjoy the host but asking the chef if it would be traditional in Japan to serve meat/ reindeer as sushi is one of the most clueless questions I think I've ever heard. He's a chef himself, he knows better than that. C'mon.

In the gulf of mexico we have -bay scallops- which are smaller, but super good! A large ammount of -sea scallops are fake and stamped out of stingray or any similar thin fish.

Respect to Munchies for it's commitment to Scandinavian/Northern European cuisine. The culinary cultures of these countries has definitely been long ignored (and wrongly so)
