Yes having a plan and painting smaller is so helpful and it also saves you money. I will paint 4 paintings of one subject, on one sheet of paper (divided into 2 or 4, and keep the best results. Yes, you can determine your colors, composition, style when you plan. This helps me. And you have different versions of one subject which adds interest to your subject. Great tips. Thank goodness paint is not that cheap because it forces us (some of us) to use limited colors(palettes)

Good tips - especially the 'paint from life' one. Lots of really good painting coaches online, but a lot of them are almost exclusively talking about painting from photos, which is very different, uses different skills (more copying than processing and interpreting) and is, imho, less interesting. So thanks!

I use bob Ross's style and sometimes paint along to his videos so I never sketch first. I use a wet on wet technique where liquid white is put on the canvas first. I use like 8 colors but thalo green and blue I do use(bc Bob Ross does) Is this good?

I was painting for many years on 16 x 20's. I started painting on the 12 x 16's about 5 months ago and my paintings seem to be much better. You said that all the aspects of painting seem to work better on smaller paintings. it's true.

Great tips any suggestions on setting up still lifes indoors & still having enough ventilation to paint with oils? I always paint out on my porch with oils to ensure enough ventilation

Thanks. That's great advice. I'm not far off finishing some night classes, and I'd planned, after that, to go back to painting a lot of small paintings with a set of primaries.
