You have done an amazing job of recapturing your grey water and making yourself a self sufficient homestead. For some of us, the ability to do such a thing is limited by the amount of costs and space required to have it all put in but if we all just took away a few pointers from your video we could collectively be more self sufficient than ever before. Even just having the ability to capture and hold water is a big deal when water is a scarce resource for some. Change can be all around us if we find ways that we can all do our share. My husband and I have started the ball rolling to becoming grass free on our property by building 16 raised garden beds and growing more of our own food. I have a plan for capturing more of our rain water and making our environmental footprint smaller. If everyone just did a little bit, it might help to take the strain off the next generation. I think you have been a great example of what is possible and thank you for these awesome videos. Even though our growing zones are completely different, there is still a lot of information that you put out that is relevant to anyone who may want to become more self sufficient or even just be more conscientious of their daily choices. Much respect

The Gold lace looks to be a Pullet. At that age, you are looking at the length of their wing feathers. Pullets (girls) wing tips get much longer and will extend to their butts and even a bit longer and they develop earlier. The Cockrels have small shorter wingtips that develop later than the girls and even in full plumage, aren't as long as the ladies. Conversely, the Cockrels tails will grow longer and straighter at first than the girls. A few early indicators. So, good news. It's always stressful to have multiple Roos. They eventually fight and and compete so you have no choice but re-home some. It's also very stressful on the hens when they're being serviced by multiple roos. The lav will outgrow the rest very soon and she will be able to fend for herself. Your garden is gonna be beautiful when you're done.

What a transformation! So much work and passion, you must be so proud. This is the ideal lifestyle in my opinion. Very healthy, both mentally and physically, and so rewarding.
I started edible gardening 2 years ago, and put in raised beds last year. Ive been having so much fun experimenting and learning and producing food for my family. And weve all been really loving the fresh, delicious, quality foods. This year were trying strawberries for some homegrown fruit for the first time to go with the veggies and herbs. Someday I hope to move to a property on a couple acres and have a proper homestead with a huge garden and some livestock (starting with chickens at first and maybe move up from there, but for now Im enjoying learning in my small suburban backyard.

Have you considered implementing wind technology? I see plenty of wind in your videos. Harmony VAWT is a product Ive been following for a few years now and its something Im interested in implementing at my home which would be a source of electrical supply at night, day, hot or cold as long as there is a wind source. Adding that option to a solar powered system would mitigate the lack of production at night (as long as the wind is blowing) and would continue to keep the solar battery topped off.

You guys are truly amazing and I applaud you for all that you do to conserve and help the environment. Before I retired to a very small spot in Yuma from the Seattle area I was an avid gardener. At 82 gardening has become a little more challenging and most of it is in large pots, but I am still at it. I looooooove your place and the thoughtful features and all I can say is that I wish I was your neighbor (I would help weed as I love weeding. I will continue following your adventures.

nice to see that cistern. Figured California would be one of those states that would go so far as to make collecting rainwater in more than a small bucket some sort of issue. There have actually been people likening capturing rainwater in any real way to stealing saying that it robs run-off from your property to feed streams and such. I have a 66 gallon collapsible tank collecting water from my gutters and the way I see it, if the rain falls on my property, it's my water lol.

My God. SPECTACULAR. I am in awe. I love everything about your homestead (Except the California location )
This is the first year Ive gotten serious about trying to figure out this food growing thing (even though Ive known for awhile now that food instability is a bonafide inevitable reality)
I binge watch your videos with my notebook in hand. Youve done just an amazing job w your urban homestead. Goals!
Cheers! from a TinFoil Hatter in Zone 6

For your inground beds are you still doing the no dig method with cardboard down first? Do you find that works well? I would be nervous the crops don't go through that? I live in zone 3b so my growing season is a bit short lol
I have just moved to a house with a yard and I'll be trying inground planting for the first time. As I have followed you since living in an apartment growing only in pots until now.

I absolutely loved my buff Orpington hen. Lovely and quite friendly bird. Mine was very broody, which I really enjoyed. Some people dont want that in their flock, but it was something I liked. I would recommend a buff to anyone who wants an egg laying hen that they also wish to be a little pet like or friendly. Beautiful flock and homestead. Thank you for sharing your hard work!

hello Mr. Kevin. This is not a criticism. I am confused. I had watched you a little and you bought a new property. This new lot and garden was so out there that I stopped watching.
I thought that I would check on you again as you seemed to talk my type of gardening again. You seem to be back to the previous garden? Nicole in Menlo Park

Beautiful! Question: How do you keep Kitty from using your garden as a litter box? We care for strays who use our flower beds and anywhere they can for a litter box. Even the neighbors cats sometimes come here to do their business. Cat feces is not a good thing and contains harmful parasites etc potentially. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Solar is the way to go and depending where you are, the state has programs and subsidies. Just after a few months, weve started to see the savings specially during the summer months. We also drive EV cars and thats where youll see the solar panels pay for themselves.

Is there a better way to contact your store? My order arrived damaged and I have sent several emails through the link on the website but not heard back. I'd like to get this sorted asap as I need the item for my garden this year so we are in a bit of a time crunch at this point. Thanks!

Silver Laced should be named STARLIGHT! Buff Orpingtons are my ALL TIME FAVES! Love her name! When my boys were little, they had a pair or BOs and they named them Love & Lovey. To tame them, soak their chick starter and feed them by hand-they will become so tame!

That pond is amazing! It just transforms the whole area. I love your epic seedling trays. I'm still a hard core soil blocker, but the trays are so much easier for pricking out into and potting up the mini soil blocks. Plus they are better for gifts!
