Fountain Maintenance Garden Answer Tracy: Tip to keep fountain water and even bird baths clear of algae: just before dark, add a tiny amount of regular chlorine bleach (e. g, Clorox) to the water. For a standard birdbath, just a teaspoon, for a multi-tiered fountain, perhaps two tablespoons. THIS WILL NOT HURT WILDLIFE OR ANY SURROUNDING OLANTS. By adding this tiny amount of bleach at dusk, it will kill all algae within minutes, but has all night to evaporate from the water which bleach does very quickly. Birds wont drink from it during the night, and the tiny amount is so diluted, it wouldnt hurt them even if they did. (I have bred and raised numerous species of finches for many years and know this to be true. Your fountains will be crystal clear the next morning. Now, the algae that was killed does become debris, so you still have to clean your fountains periodically, but I find simply draining the water and refilling it a week or so after this treatment with fresh water, is all you need to do. I plant right up to my fountains and bird baths and have never lost a plant, or even seen damage, from this approach. But remember. just a TINY bit of bleach!

Hi Laura. I'm wondering if you've ever considered doing some aquascaping in your fountains? There are plenty of floating plants that would look amazing. Like water lettuce or smaller water lilies. Most of them don't need any sort of substrate, or if they do it can be a small contained planter/bowl so there's nothing free floating. It would help cut down a lot of the algae growth by taking the nutrients out of the water. It would also raise the PH level a fair bit and help you a tad with the hard water. Just had the thought that it would be right up your alley combining two things you love. I really do hope you see this.

It looks like you've got the same hard water issue we have here in Texas. You might try soaking the pumps in vinegar to dissolve the calcium deposits. Works beautifully. Also great for coffee pots and shower heads.
As for cleaning your fountains. you might try this. I do it with my birdbath. Fill the basin with bleach and cover with a black (must be black) trash bag. Leave in hot sun for a day or two. Remove trash bag, empty bleach, and rinse well. Nothing does a better job cleaning my birdbath. Bleach dries to an elemental salt, so it's harmless once it's dry. Hope this helps. Lisa

Why are you not make a dust catcher before Your water is goining in Your pump.
A lady pantyhose is very simpel, to put that before Your pump.
The waterhose is goining in hard plastic tube.
Now you only have to find a other tube with rubber inside fits the first tube.
Between these tube you strech a little peace of panty.
The hard plastic tube Goes over the originele pump waterhose in to the pump.
1 a month you clean the hard tube with the panty, and Your pump lives much longer.
If the panty is not strong enough, look for a medical panty.
Good luck.

Try some activated carbon (like you would in a fish tank. rinse before you use. my mom has a multi tiered fountain like this and she puts some on each level to absorb the impurities in the water when birds bring unwanted(s) into her BB/Fountain. Also, she buys her pumps from eBay. so cheap she buys several to have on hand when needed. just a couple of thoughts. thanks for the video and all the knowledge.

The last fountain in this video looks like our fountain, its a Henri studio and its called Rebecca at the well ours has the statue carrying a jug on her shoulder and it pumps water out the top of the jug along with the pitcher in her hand. Have you tried a product called simple green for cleaning your fountains it works well and is environmentally safe.

What type of cover do you have covering your pergola near the fountain you repaired about 2 years ago as you were going around addressing fountain maintenance? Love your show. We are contemplating installing a fountain and really benefit from your videos. Great work and congrats on the arrival of your darling little girl! (Andrea in San Jose)

Laura and Aaron why dont you get an RV water filter and fill your fountains up with filtered water and that would maybe eliminate some of your hard water problem in prolong the life of your pumps I think theyre 24 bucks or something at Walmart? Its just a thought might save you a little bit of money.

Good to see you Aaron. You two are so funny. Loved the video and am definitely thinking of getting a fountain. Thank you for the advice. Watched twice and watched the adds all the way through. I often skip the adds but won't anymore now that I know it helps you guys out if I watch them. Cheers.

Noticed none of your pumps have a filter. Why? There should be a housing in front of the impeller with a foam filter or screen. The pumps are getting trash and algae in them. Another tip for cleaning the pump/impeller is to soak in a container of vinegar for an hour or so.
