Planting Black Cat Pussywillow! Garden Answer Gigi: Ha! I know there are different species and I have no idea what species I have. About 14 years ago, I planted a pussy willow with the expectation of beautiful stems for cutting. It was purchased from a reputable nursery in this area and was perhaps twice as large as what you are showing. I thought it would make a large shrub/small tree, roughly the size you mentioned. Well, before I could blink it seems, it turned into a tree that is at least 25 feet tall. It is so high I dont get to see the catkins and certainly can't reach to prune. However, hummingbirds nest in it, so I guess they love it. :) BTW, I am over in the coast in zone 8 and, while the deer dont eat it, they do occasionally shred the bark badly, rubbing their antlers I guess, but the tree thankfully has survived that. I would love to plant 1 of the black cats you show, but would do so in an area where if it took off that would be good. I am looking forward to seeing the progression of your new side garden.

Laura, I looked up the plant to see what the bloom looked like further in developing. Wish I could figure out how to post it. I have seen this plant several times in my life but didn't know what it was. It blooms into a brilliant yellow color. Very pretty. I believe my father planted one at one of our houses when I was young. I also found a garden center near me, an hour and a half away, who said he would order anything for me. He supplies the stores around here with hanging pots and annuals. I'm so excited. He was a very nice man and said he tries to help anyone in our area because the better my yard is landscaped the more customers he will get. lol We won't start getting anything in till middle of April and can't put out till after May 10th. See you in your next one!

Hi Laura! I'm not sure if you'll see this comment or not, but I just want to thank you so much for what you do. I used to not garden at all, I didn't even like it and didn't want to try. My mom would ask if I want to come join her, but I'd always decline. But, ever since I started watching your videos I became inspired. Now my mom and I garden together all the time and we talk about plants and planting ideas and just all kinds of fun stuff! Thanks to you, my mom and I are closer than ever before. Please keep doing what you're doing and inspiring all of us.

Ive always loved pussy willows, and these are particularly beautiful. We had a tease of sun and warmer temps the last couple of days in Upstate New York but another rain/snow storm is predicted for tonight through Saturday morning. I was able to clean out a couple of beds, but thats about it. The ground is still pretty frozen. Im jealous that your tulips popping. Mine havent even begun to make any sort of show yet.

Hi Laura. These look like a great bush for our lower yard behind our house. It is quite wet out there! Question: Can the branches be cut at the early blossoming times and be preserved for floral arrangements? I think I recall my mother doing that, but she is no longer with us for me to ask. She was an extraordinary gardener and her love of gardening rubbed off on me! :-) Thanks!

Pussy willow buds and end branches can be put with oil or fat, in a crock pot on low. People would decompose the leaves separately. You can boil almost any part and use the water to soak feet with some hair conditioner. lean over and put your hands in also, you can also put in vinegar.

Hi Laura, looking forward to see what you do with that space! Much better to get rid of the sod lawn, its nothing but a water guzzler. Water is too precious a resource to waste on lawns I think. Also, can you recommend any vining perennials that would do fine in partial shade?

Im curious about the unfinished road in the background! Are there any future plans to lengthen the road around your property? Will you have to move these plants and trees inside your fence? I love your videos. Have learned a lot from watching. Thank you!

Thank you for giving me a deer proof option! I am still sick over the loss of my new Azaleas we planted last spring. Sigh. well they need to eat, I get it. But go back to the woods and eat all that over growth I can see from my porch!
