Planting Hydrangeas, Fixing the Chicken Coop, & Planting a Couple Pots! Garden Answer Corrie: Hey Lauren, Im a big fan and I garden down in Fort Worth, TX (zone 8A. I was wondering if you could speak about your thoughts on soil amending and mulching in the Fall? I dont put down fertilizer but I often try to add a layer of fresh compost or soil with things like dry molasses, azomite, and earthworm castings. THEN I usually mulch with something like Hardwood. Is this too much? Should I just wait for the spring to do this or do both? Do you mulch all of your beds before your major frosts come in? Our winters are so mulch milder than yours, but I still try to give most of my beds protection in the fall and additional clean up and mulch in the spring. Although as you well know, its expensive to mulch in both seasons and Im wondering if Im doing too much. My plants have been fine so far with this system but Im new and learning and wondering if its necessary? Thanks and stay well and live fearlessly!

I loved it, it was so peaceful. Almost felt like we were there with you. Certainly felt more like me planting, in silence (well, my roosters and hens are noisy, water fowl too. And native birds, and then sitting back and taking stock of what I've done.
Love all the styles of videos you guys do! Of course music makes it all the more buttoned up - but loved the lack of music in this one for the calmness of it all.
Nice work on the coop! Looks really good now - and much safer: -D Your girls love you, too hehe spoiled ones.

Ive used Repel All for years now. Our primary critters are deer, armadillo, raccoons and possums. It works great, however if you get a hard rain, re-apply. Also it has never lasted 2 months for me, more like 3 weeks, but I am in a zone 9A just north of Houston, Texas and this is just my experience. But better to be safer than sorry, and not killing your self to plant 50 plants only to wake up the next morning and them all eaten! Which sadly has happened. Your skunk doesnt stand a chance!

I just discovered your videos and I wan to sa you are AMAZING! and my sisters and I are totally jealous: )
I loved the beginning of the video which showed you just planting the hydrangeas. Can you show more of that? I would love to see how you organize your gardening tasks (your barn, your plant feeding schedule, etc) Can you show how you keep track of it all?

Hi Laura, I think you should just pour some concrete right under the door into the coop, it works amazing! We had to do that right under the gate of our backyard to keep our husky from digging his way out and escaping, lol, it definitely fixed the problem. And you can cover the concrete with soil or gravel for a nicer finish.

even just refrigerator box cardboard spread out under a layer of mulch will discourage skunk, raccoon, possum from digging up rows of seeded wildflower (added pitchforked holes for root penetration. Caught it all on a critter cam. After a few weeks of scratching the surface, they just gave up.

Ive found when confronted with a garden problem the solution usually makes the garden far more interesting. I like the slab in front of the chicken coup run much more than just gravel. It looked nice before but now its got more character. Really enjoying your videos!

With the beautiful hydrangeas. Pinks, purples and white. Maybe salvia or catmint below the hydrangeas. then some white charm supertunias on the bottom layer. Ooohh or even ones with some lovely yellow pops. Reminding me of one of your containers from the driveway.

Has your son tried Planting anything yet! mirroring what he sees often
And, I really like your hair. Seems like you always manage to have it done nice and seems like it lasts. Would you be willing to share what you use, your technique, and do you burn it?
