Winter Sowing & Seed Planting Update! Garden Answer Lilly: Arrowleaf Balsamroot has a low germination rate and need to be sown by the hundreds into slightly alkaline soil in fall and left to freeze at the very spot they're going to live (they don't transplant well. Their tap root extends to 1, 5m (3-5 foot) in length and is up to 10cm (or 4) think. It's best to dig a hole 5 feet deep and fill it with water several times to create a water reservoir for the tap root. With less and less rainfall in the intermountain region of the western US, this plant is actually on the decline in the wild.

Hi. First of all I love your videos and your flowers and trees are so beautiful. My question is winter sowing in n jugs. I used soil from my compost pile to winter sow and some are coming up already and it's late November. To my surprise I have a lot of weeds coming up as well in the jugs and don't know which is flowers and trees and which is weeds. I'm guessing the compost had weed seeds in it and I have over 40 jugs, not to mention 20 bags in the refrigerator. I can't tell which is weeds and which is flowers lol. Please help

Growing inside is 100% predictable for me because I will kill them all bringing them outside. I started getting jugs of spring water about 6 months ago and have tons of jugs to play with and lots of soil that I fertilized but liked everything in 2 summers ago. I might as well give this a try. I think it will be good for me because it's less maintenance. Once I get some seedlings ready for transplant then I can share them with friends that are much better at growing than I am and we will see what happens.

How much fun to watch this episode! I wish I discovered you sooner. I just started winter seeding outdoor like you did. I have dropped too many seeds in the jug, average 30. I seeded 12 globe artichokes in one milk jug. If they all come up, I will need to thin them out. I used Jeff seeding mix with some coconut coir. No fertilizer. Your artichoke seedlings look strong and healthy. Did you apply fertilizer while they germinated?

I am inspired to try this because I dont have room inside to do trays. I fight a lot of different gardening challenges in Colorado Springs including hail and squirrels, but the biggest nemesis to my flowers is earwigs which are abundant. I can imagine placing these jugs on the ground and finding jugs full of them. Do the jugs need to be facing south? How much light is required?

Do you grow and sell flowers? Or just love growing flowers etc? I always use old milk, juice, water, soft drink, even bleach(as long as its thoroughly cleaned out its fine) bottles for my seedlings too. I actually start my citrus, stone fruit etc seedlings in them too. They come in handy.

I want a green house, always have. I have a mini greenhouse that I started Baptisia Alba from stem cuttings. Those majestic plants come back every year and are beautiful! I love starting plants. I grew Yucca from seed, and even hosta from seed. It's so cool!

Watching you deal with all the tape, I'm going to try cutting around the jug leaving a hinge section and crimping the top part in order to snap the jug together for easy access and reuse. Omitting the messy tape.
Does the dirt have to be so full?

I ordered grease pencils for all labeling. Sharpie does not work in the garden either.
The buds of the buzz buttons not the leaves are used in my 4LeafMicros business by my bartenders in cocktails. Gonna have to try the milkjug method.

Could you give the dates you planted seeds and put these out and then what date you brought these in? And what zone are you in? I am in zone 5b. Or if anyone else that sees this that has experience with winter gardening could comment
