Garden Maintenance Around the Chicken Coop! Garden Answer Wiltrud: If you just want some birds as pets, ever thougt about having quails (Wachteln) instead of Chickens in the chicken coop? It looks as it has the ideal size for quails. Quails are very cute, I saw them in a butterfly house in Austria once. But if you need the eggs chickens are of course better. The eggs of quails are mini. And I don't know if the chicken coop is warm enough for quails in Winter.
For chickens the outside could be bigger, maybe 4 times as big. Pheasants would be also pretty, but it can be they make awful noise and probably they need more space as well. Same with peacocks.

Hi Laura, Aaron and Benjamin! Those areas look so much better after the pruning! I love the chicken curtain! What a great gift! I need to remember to tell my daughter about pruning/shaping the roses. She has a climber, yellow, that she bought last year from your parent's garden center and has talked about pruning it until she can get a trellis up. It was fun, as always, watching Russell and his antics. Congrats to Aaron for getting an A+ from the arborist! Thank you so much for sharing! And, yes, it's more important to spend time with the boys!

Your humidity and powdery mildew made me laugh. We have 73% humidity today and most days and Ive been watching your videos and planting densely and putting in irrigation only to realize that you and I live in totally different climates. So powdery mildew is on all of my plants. But thats okay. Im learning and tweaking what you do to make it more appropriate for my climate. Im a slow learner! Anyway, you said you trimmed your roses to cut out the powdery mildew, but will you do anything else to treat it? Thanks!

Another great video! Just a suggestion: There are a ton of plants that are edible for chickens. They tend to trample everything, but if youre strategic and offer them a lot of plants they can bounce back after being eaten. There are also plenty of plants that get tall enough quickly enough that the chickens dont do a lot of damage. It really offers them a lot of variation which reduces them pecking each other as well.

I loved this video and watching Russell be your helper. It was great seeing how you cut the roses back. I did wonder if the hard prune is tough on them in the summer, but the said they would bounce back. I would love to see there progress in 3 weeks or so. Love your curtains they are gorgeous. Thank you both for sharing your home and for all of the time you put into your videos. Blessings to you and your family. Xx

Absolutely love this one. I am a bit prejudice though. The chicken coop area has always been my favorite, with the moon garden as a close second place. I am always happy to see Russell and I have been wanting to see his unique paws up close. Then your boys came in at the end. I get something out of everyone of your videos, but this one was special, i am glad I saved it for a slow, lazy Sunday morning.

So fun to watch all the maintenance you did around the coop! Thanks for letting us tag along. Are you planning to add more chickens to your flock? Ive been researching and now I want so many chickens. Our coop is almost finished and Im suffering from chicken math without even having my first chicken! Im hoping to have a small, friendly flock that lays a rainbow of eggs!

I realize this video is 6 mo old. but I'm curious. What do you do with all your clippings and stuff? Do you compost them? If so. where do you keep the pile? BTW. I love your videos. I have a huge 4 acre yard. really only trying to maintain about 2 acres. and it is very wild, and unplanned. I'm working on a more cohesive look. slowly.

Laura, I cut back several perennials last night trying to get spider mites under control. When I woke up this morning, I read an gardening advice email that said not to cut your shrubs back now to avoid new growth and to wait until fall to prune. Just wondering what your thoughts are since you cut back the Veronica.

Laura, your chicken coop and surrounding beds are my favorite place on your property. It is such a joy to see it from the planning stages to the beautiful area it has become. I hope to build a chicken coop next year and you can be sure I will draw as much inspiration from yours as I can get!
