Planting Arbs, Roses, and Baptisia in the Garden! Garden Answer CatCaretakerID: OOOh so pretty it is all beginning to look. I'm am waiting to see how your Totem Poles do. I have plans to put two in my back yard this Spring. I absolutely love the Tater Tots and have plans to add at least one to my small beds. I also love those Sunorita roses, but I shy away from roses because of the thorns - but the colors they produce are gorgeous. I can't believe you planted those Baptisias - I was just looking at them online the other night to fill some larger spaces I have. now I can wait a bit and see how they do for you. I am so loving how the South Garden is evolving for you. And I was so excited, yet holding my breath a bit when you drove on the grass pathway. You guys are amazing. Thanks for helping me so much with my small spaces by sharing your knowledge and acumen. I'm beginning to have some successes because of you - even after the 108 degree temps we got this summer. Garden Answer ROCKS!

I love Baptesia. It's one of those really stately-looking native perennials that fit into a formal landscape really well. They have that great vase shape and two tinted leaves with the slight blue and green. They do attract bees when they flower but it's the most bustling plant in the garden. It's mostly just bumblebees that work them because the flowers have to be opened manually by the bee and not all bees are good at that. Butterfly wise they're more of a host plant to a few of the smaller butterflies. So they'll lay eggs on the plant and you'll get the odd caterpillar but nothing that's known to defoliate the plant. I can't say I've ever noticed butterflies on the flowers.

I have planted 2 Kordes shrub roses this year. They bloomed well for the first few months and I was really good about deadheading them. The last month they just keep shooting up super tall branches (like 6-7 feet tall) with no buds. I have fertilized but not since they have been shooting up these tall branches. I feel like Im doing something wrong! Any thoughts? I know you do David Austin or the Oh So Easy and not the Kordes but maybe you have experience with this kind of growth.

I named an area I've been working on My Sisters' Garden after I noticed it couldn't be called My Hydrangea Garden given the other shrubs and trees I'd planted among the hydrangeas. I planted three 'Queen of Sweden' roses for my mom and her two sisters and had a special rock my late sister had carved for me (Kate's Secret Garden) and a plaque my other sister gave me (A sister is a forever friend. I gaze on it every morning from my deck as I have my coffee.

You are so encouraging to us new gardeners. Never have I felt so inspired to look for and plant so many different plants. Although Im in 10A and not sure what is the difference in your hot and dry climate compared to ours. We get plenty of high 90s. We dont get much rain and it doesnt snow here. Im in the San Diego, Ca area but not close to the coast.
I would love another drip irrigation video though. Like drip irrigation for dummies.

Hi Laura & Aaron, I've heard that baptisia should not be transplanted once established since they have a deep tap root. Was this factored into your placement or have you not found this to be true? I love your typical approach of moving plants around as needed but wasn't sure if these plants would really allow it or not. Thanks as always for your continued inspiration: )

Cant wait to see the Baptisia when its in bloom. I only have 9 that I need to plant. I wanted to do a drift of one or two colors here and there but I liked them all so much that I just bought one of each color PW had. Ive heard that they get an enormous root system and are really hard to transplant if you wanted to move them to a different location.

Its up to you as it is your garden/yard/beautified space /heaven on earth lol I keep having this thought of having a contest of some sort to name that part or even another part. Maybe a kid competition, coloring or idk. I am not creative at all but that thought is bouncing around in my head and it would be adorable.

The grass pathways REALLY make the space take shape. I can finally understand what the final vision is and how the space will flow. Question: How are you planning to create and maintain the edges for all of the grass? Is there a tool that will more efficiently do it every year or do you plan to edge by hand?

I love your videos but I am curious about your end game for your property. There is just so much going on; such a huge area. Are you planning to sell your flowers, vegetables, etc. or create a show garden where people can come visit? How many acres are you on? It just looks so big! Thanks, Helen
