Im So Happy with My Watermelon Harvest! Garden Answer Poorold: To grow the best watermelons, dig a hole, fill it with composted cow manure, them make a hill over this to plant the melons in. I promise you will be amazed. This is how all the rural farmers used to plant their melons, they bought nothing. I still plant my melons this way and they grow very strong and vigorous vines with tasty melons. Depending on the variety they can get really huge. Some of the old varieties like Congo, Black Diamond and a few other heirloom seeds will produce melons up to 50 pounds. My wife has a picture of her grandfather sitting in his rocking chair on his front porch with 3 of the biggest melons I have seen and yes they were raised with the cow manure method.

When I was about 4 years old I was at my grandmother's house. My grandpa was out in the field. Grandma said he was planting watermelons. I wanted to know how to grow watermelons, so I watched him. He had a bucket of fish heads and he walked a few steps, dug a hole and drop a fish in the hole. Fast forward a few months, I was back over to Grandma and Grandpa's. And Grandpa was out in the field, picking these huge watermelon.
So being a child the first thought in my head was I need to get a hold of some fish so I can grow watermelons. Just a cute story I thought you would enjoy.

Is it 85-90 days after planting or after pollination? I planted watermelon in a pot on my deck but there was slow growth and no flowers. I bought a greenhouse for my deck to keep the predators away from my little garden and boom everything is flourishing. The watermelon vines have covered half of the greenhouse floor. There are plenty of flowers everyday so I hand pollinate because there are no bees in my area. There are 8 baby crimson growing from a pot! The biggest is the size of a golf ball. Is it up to 90 days from pollination?

Aren't plants a lot like our bodies where a healthy gut/microbiome full of nutrients and healthy microbes (funghi, parasites/WORMS, bacteria, etc) promote overall health and deter diseases and so nutrient rich SOIL (ie: the gut of plants) deters diseases?

Great video, thank you. We got15 good watermelons. Only 1 was not sweet. So happy. We have rats that forage, so this year I wrapped each watermelon in screen wire tied with metal wire. The rats did not get any this year. Learned so much from you

you grew that? you didnt even code the DNA for that watermelon, all you did is provide soil and water for this plant, right? or did you actually made the entire genetic code in the lab first before you planted it?

I actually tend to favor the full-seed watermelons over the seedless. They tend to taste better, but that's only judging by the ones sold at supermarkets so my judgment may not be the most accurate.

You should wash the melon off with a little dish soap and rinsed thoroughly before cutting into them. You don't want dirt on them to give your family worms! YIKES!

I love this. I'm growing Jubillee and sugar baby for the first time this year so I have no idea what to expect in the next month or so. I'm excited! Thank you!
