Removing Our Pine Trees! Garden Answer Frasers: Last year I was taking pictures out of my living room window of birds at the feeder and I focused on the thirty foot Austrian pine I planted like fifteen years ago in our yard. To my absolute dismay I could see a lot of dead branches and I knew it had finally succumbed to the beetles that have killed thousands of pines in our state. I told my husband it was going to have to come down soon. Im usually pretty steadfast about what needs to be removed for whatever reason but that tree was huge and it was truly the focal point of the whole garden and my heart was broken. Now I have a Juniper that I cannot keep bagworms out of and a redbud that is growing into the side of the house and onto the roof. Hard decisions need to be made and Im disabled now from arthritis and need things to be easier. Cest la vie. gardens remain gardens even when they change:

I feel ya. we just removed 17 white pine and 2 Norway Maples. the Maples had Norway Blight and most of one of the trees would be dropping leaves while its green. very poor sickly looking trees that were in the front of our house, so the front is STARK bare. and then 17 white pines over 80' tall down the side of our property and our neighbors on the other side. Its HUGE blank canvas and daunting, but then I found you and have found some inspiration from and arbor to cottage gardens. so here we go! LOL

I know what you mean about the blank slate. My first year here I tried to work around some existing trees, but by the fall I was sick of it and them all removed. Wow, what a difference it made. Now I love the space. Your drawings look awesome, and don't worry, I think we've all taped graph paper together at some time. It works great. That's a very minor thing. You go girl. I'm loving it all. So fun to watch someone else work when I'm still in pjs.

I moved moved into my in laws house a few years ago. I always liked her garden and the size of it. But once I started maintaining it through out the seasons. It really didnt have much interest through out the year. So I have been taking old, diseases and wrong placement plants out. I did a layout of the garden on my iPad. I can know design a garden that reflects me. Thank you for the encouragement Laura with your videos.

Im SO excited to watch your garden seriously change! We have a literal blank slate in our backyard. (Im talking just one tree) now that youre going to have some blank spaces could you make some content on how to create/plan/start a garden space with a more realistic(I wish I had a garden center) planting? Like less plants? Or even what you could start from seed and get a great show?

Oh dear, they parked it right at your fence line. Not cool. And it looks like they already have something next to the fence behind your barn so they can't move it there. Wondering if they built a parking pad underneath it. In our municipality, you can't park vehicles on grass or an area that is not designated for parking. I would love to hear how this gets resolved.

So since you will be removing most of the picket fencing, will you still keep the trellis archway where it is? I think I remember you talking about it in a previous video, but I can't remember for sure. I am so excited to see all the exciting new additions to your garden this year! It is so much fun watching all your dreams come to fruition! So happy for you guys!

Get a professional architect and landscaper. Let them put the plan in paper so you can see the whole design and effect in your house and the whole area of your property. It's a big work but with professional plan, it's worth your money in the long run. You can have some trees cut and some structure of the house remove and change but it will lovely once it's done.

You should be able to do whatever makes you happy on your property. I have 2 evergreen pears that need to come out in front of our house. they never should have been planted here in the pacific NOrth West way too humid for them they get so much fungus they look dead all the time. Wrong tree for this place they need hot dry conditions. so good for you!

Devastating video watching those beautiful old trees get chipped up in the name of vanity. It is good that you plant new trees but this doesn't mean it is right to kill everything first followed by a long self justification speech. Some of those trees were probably older than you. 'Never mind kill it anyway we can always have a new one'
