Spring Rose Pruning! Garden Answer Tonya: Help Please! If anyone has any good advice for me, I would definitely appreciate it!
When you deadhead you should always cut the stem by the five leaf method in order for your stem to grow outwards, right? I understand why this is necessary.
How do you keep the stems on your rose bushes from growing inward and every which way, when you just go in to prune and cut in the fashion Laura just demonstrated? Will those branches not grow in the direction you cut them off according to which side the buds are on?
I always have a difficult time with pruning and/or deadheading my roses!
This year I am getting so discouraged as I am dealing with an extremely bad case of black spot on one and think it is starting to spread to the one next to it! Been a tough year already fighting black spot, and the dang slugs are taking over many different plants? I also have a white mold that keeps appearing under and around many plants, just right on top of the soil? Now, yesterday I discovered all these little tiny spiders racing around everywhere? I have never dealt with spider mites or tiny spiders like this, not sure if they are the same thing or not?
The thing about the internet, when you research you will find 10 different people giving you 10 different answers on what is what and their how to, to fix the problem. Sheww whom do you believe?
I know I can trust Lauras' advice and her subs.
Thanks to anyone whom has any helpful tips!

Hi Laura! I have a 3 yr old knock out rose and live in Northern Arkansas. My rose bush had a fungus on it last year and some of the leaves turned yellow and the stems had some black spots. It still was full of blooms but I had to trim in the summer. I cleaned it up a couple of days ago but still see stems with black spots. I cut out most of them but question is: Do I need to cut all the stems with black spots or can I spray with fungicide? I removed all the old leaves that had fallen on the ground too.

I have a question; I see you are using felco gloves when pruning; is there any type or brand of gloves that is the best? Are there any that are puncture proof? Several times I get stuck while weeding or pruning; ouch! Can you do a video comparing and where to get the best quality gloves? Cloth ones seem to get soaked pretty fast and make my hands so gross inside. Some do not have great grip even some I cant answer my phone while gardening and have to take them off. Any info or help would be great!

Sadly I can't do the pruning and most yard work anymore. I am however trying to teach my husband. and so far he has done well. Seeing you do it will help. So thank you. Pray for my Mom's blue hydranga out back. beatufiul but had someone wash the house siding this past late fall/early winter and afraid he may have gotten his cleaner mix on it, and yes, it was covered. Yeah for your yard and the things coming up. Enjoy watching. I do a few continers. Love getting my hands in the earth

Hi Laura do you add fresh mulch to your roses after pruning & fertilising? Also how is your road dahl rose going? is it an easy care rose with less diseases & pest? I'm after one with similar colour or light pink but I do want one that has strong fragrance so i'm also thinking of planting Earth Angel roses instead. No idea my first time to plant roses. Maybe the thornless roses are better? what do you think? I'm so lost lol.

Looking forward to the roses blooming! Also not sure if you've tried the Bionic gauntlet rose gloves, it covers forearms well. The best thing about them is that they protect your skin but you can still feel through the fingers so great for rose pruning! If I can find some small ones can send your way (I'm not affiliated with them, just found them at a garden show and Love them.

Is this type of pruning good for all roses? Can I do this with my David Austin rose in zone 9? I saw your other rose video where you only count about 5 leaves down and cut for shaping or trimming, Since my rose is one year old and not very developed yet, what would be the difference between me trimming it down by 1/3 or 1/2 vs. doing only shaping or trimming?

Hello. I decided to go ahead and prune back my rose yesterday. As I was cutting out the dead I noticed a green gooey substance coming out of a tiny hole each dead branch had. With further inspection, I see that it was little worms that have took residents in my rose. My question is, is there a way to flush them out or will my bush eventually die? Thanks!

Thank you so much for this advice! I just bought my first house and inherited 3 mature rose bush plants that Id love to maintain, but was so intimidated to touch or prune for fear of possibly disturbing them in a negative way. Im so grateful for this resource as we approach the season.
