Pruning Hydrangeas (Shrub & Tree Form, Hellebore Cleanup & More Sweet Pea Planting!
video description
I de-headed my hydrangea last year. I saw buds, that I left, in the wood, and determined it was an old wood plant.
The buds surfaced to the top of the wood over the winter.
I do not know what it is, I picked it up at a garden store and the only label was pink hydrangea
We got 6 foot of snow for weeks and the buds were noticeably dead after being submerged in freezing temperatures, going from green to brown, and no development for months after.
I began to see new wood develop, green foliage as well, so I went ahead and cut the old wood back. Buds and all.
I'm just now concerned I'll never see blooms this year-or ever, and maybe I should have left the dead.
I'm wondering if I should just uproot it and start again.
I'm just not sure.
Anyone know anything?

I began pruning my two very large, over grown Loropetalums yesterday, and instead of pruning all willy-nilly as I have done the past few years, I used things you have taught me in all ofthese pruning videos. I kept thinking things like, open the canopy, that branch is pointing in, cut it, that branch is touching another one, cut it, that is a weak branch, cut it, this will allow the plant to put energy into new growth. I've never had pruning lessons before, and I'm so thankful for the things I am learning from you.

16: 22 Why, of all things, I wanna grow so many sweet peas. Honestly, same here this year I had a sudden urge to grow sweet peas but I was waiting for your video on planting sweet peas and the last vid u posted on growing sweet peas really helped me so thanks a lot. Just asking, I've heard that you're supposed to cut the flowers off sweet peas before they start dying so they don't produce seed pods. Is it bad for the plant if it does or can I let them produce seeds so I can get more seeds?

I planted 3 limelight hydrangeas and 2 Incrediballs toward the end of summer last year and had a couple of pruning questions. First, now that the snow is finally melting, they're only about 18 inches tall. Would I still trim them back or leave them alone until they grow bigger. For my already established hydrangeas, do you cut back the wimpy branches all the way to the main branch or do you leave a little attached? Thank you for your help and constant inspiration.

We had a very cold winter here in Oklahoma and I'm new to gardening. I just started last March when quarantine started and after one of your videos was the first one to pop up in my search for how to build your own flower bed. Been hooked ever since! Anyway, my Nandina is looking pretty sad, but I do see some new green! What is your suggestion? Should I leave alone, trim dead branches or trim how you trim roses? I wish I could send you a picture. Thank you!

What probably got your hydrangeas was a boring wasp. It lays its eggs in the stem and then the larvae eats out the center of your hydrangea. But the worst part of it is that the larvae creates a bacteria that will get in the root system and kill your whole plant. You have to spray in the spring and again midsummer and fall. At least I do after I lost my beautiful Annabelle hydrangea a few years ago. I done some reading up on those small little wasps.

Omg I had a dream that you were my guest within my family! And in my dream you were like 6'4. We hung out, had dinner with my family, you stayed at my place with my family, and we became good friends. And when you left to go home, I remember reaching up to give you a hug. I'm already 5'10 and in my dreams I'm thinking wow she's super tall. Maybe I had that dream because I listen to you to fall asleep.

Im curious about fertilizing bigger bushes that are underplanted with bulbs like your hydrangeas. I see you did it no issue so must be fine but I have a line of rhodies and a row of lelands that I underplanted with all kinds of bulbs Im wondering if its ok to use rhody or evergreen specific fertilizers without hurting the bulbs? Or should I just be using like plant tone for everything? Thank you!

Cane borers! They get in the cut end of the stem. I got them last year. I plan on putting masking tape of the ends and maybe wrapping those tiny rubber bands on to keep them on and soon. Lots of effort for some blooms! I was happy to see about pruning the wispy branches on the Hydrangeas. That's what I need to do this year. I need to find a good spot to grow sweet peas.
