Harvesting & Baking with Serviceberries! Kathy: We have a multi trunk Autumn Brilliance service berry that is about 12 years old and it gets sun from about noon to dark, but it has very few leaves on the bottom branches. It is on the southwest corner of our house. It is right next to a pergola with a wisteria on it. We cut the wisteria back hard to try to give the service berry more sun and I gave it tree tone this year. Can you think of anything else that might help it produce more leaves? It just looks a bit sparse. It did have some berries this year but more so on the upper branches. Just not looking as full as yours.

I watched for ages thinking Id never heard of this Berry until you mentioned the other names. I grew up with two amelanchier trees in the garden and never knew (or even thought to look up) that they were edible, I feel both dense and amazed! We just loved them for blossom and foliage and that birds loved them. Ive just sent my mum a message to say she should try and beat the birds to some this year. Amazing thing to learn after all this time - thank you!

It just brings tears to my eyes to watch you with your son. When he was helping you plant, it reminded me of my mom and me. And then to watch you bake together, lost it! My boys are 27 and 30. enjoy every moment. My mom taught me the love of the earth. She is 83 this year and still wants to garden! So my brother and I made some raised planter boxes for her. The tomatoes are in! Yay.

You think they are underused there. Here in Australia took me 12 months to find just a seedling of a tree. They are very rare here. Found one place that is doing too different types. So waiting on them to get cuttings done.
I want a hedge row of Saskatoon bushes to edge off the food forest. Going to do well with a front fence of brambles and the other side with grapes lol.

That was fun Laura! Just in case we forgot your directions, we could just listen to Benjamin. He was hanging on to your every word and repeating every direction, exactly as you said. Then he takes his little finger and leveled the cinnamon just as you showed him with the baking soda. It was oh my goodness precious! Good job Moma!
PS That Apple and knife scared me to death!

We planted one, not sure of the variety, years ago. We were so busy with life we didn't prune as we should have so too many thick trunk limbs. Can they be thinned yet?
Do all varieties have edible fruit? I munch but have never baked. Kinda small and yes, little seeds but the greenhouse we purchased from did.

I have a tree in the back of our property. looks like a white lilac in the spring. and now in the summer, has a ton of red berries; I have no idea what the tree is or if the berries are edible. The blooms have NO smell in the spring. I think I will leave them for the birds!

OMG I was freaking out that Benjamin was going to chop off a finger with the ceramic knife on the apple! So great he's going to be a Master Gardener and Master Baker as a result of his heritage, but still, please be careful.

A Serviceberry! We have a mystery tree that we need to replace (heavily diseased. Its a apple Serviceberry! Now I know what kind of tree to buy. BTW, we never get berries off it though, the birds LOVE the fruit.

I just moved into a new home, and there are a few little trees in the back. I didn't know what they were until this video! Thank you for helping me identify my service berry tree in the back and for this recipe!
